Rustler vxl gearing

I have a vxl rustler and I use a 5000 and 3000mah nimh battery and I have 83/28 gearing
I run this car on gravel Ann grass and just bash it it starts running a little hot
Any tips on what I should gear this at

The 28 t pinion is high speed gearing. For bashing drop back to the stock 25t, check temps, if you are still hot go down to a 23t

Should I keep the 83 spur on it and try the smaller pinion?

The spur us fine. The smaller pinion gear changes the gearing a lot more than a spur change would.
