    Trencher tire question

Should I buy pre-mounted trencher tires or buy the tires and wheels separately. I am asking this because I have heard that they balloon a lot. Is this true? Also are there other wheel options instead of desperados?

They balloon like crazy unless you get them unmounted and gorilla tape them.

At what speed would that type of ballooning happen. I have a set of premounted ones on order now I'm thinking otherwise. I have never heard of gorilla tape, what exactly is it?

Gorilla tape is like duct tape but thicker and stronger. Anything over probably 25-30mph will balloon the trenchers. Any time the truck wheelies and you are on the throttle the front wheels will balloon like crazy also. They don't balloon too bad on 2s though.

You can find info on the forum or youtube about taping them. You basically turn the tires inside out and wrap them in the tape. I layed out a strip of tape approximately 2.5-3' long and rolled the tires over it. Mine have a little more than 2 complete wraps of tape each and do not balloon at all on 3s.

Saw the videos before, how bad do these tires balloon? I run 2s and stock gearing, not sure if I should get them preglued or separate and do the gorilla tape and glue them myself.

If you plan to stick to 2s, I wouldn't bother taping them. When my truck was stock, I never saw much ballooning with 2s on the 11/54 gearing with the untaped trenchers.

+1 for that, 2s with a stock setup is ideal with trenchers, mip's would be a good idea also.

So should I buy them unmounted and tape them? I run 2 cell lipos and might upgrade in the future to a more powerful motor system with 3 cell batteries. Are there any other wheel options?

The 2.8 trenchers have the traxxas style bead. Any 2.8 wheel with the traxxas style bead will work. You can also cut or stretch them to larger wheels.

If you think you may upgrade soon, I would tape them. They last surprisingly well on street surfaces.

New here and enjoying my Stampede on 3S. Any balancing issues with taping the inside wall of the Trenchers? I would imagine that any overlapping would create more mass over that area.... unless you splice the tape ends versus overlapping.

I run two wraps down the middle and cut it off where the second wrap should end. If you did and extra half of wrap, you might have balance issues.

I run a Novak gtb and 6.5 turn motor on 2s. It's Almost as fast as my friends vxl on 3s. I gear kinda short for bmx jumps and basher tracks, not for top speed. (10 tooth pinion, 54 spur) the motor and esc stay very cool. the tires are not taped and only balloon on long, fast, straight line runs. Dosnt affect normal bashing/ racing. I can correct nose dives mid air and the ballooning is a non-issue. I feel that untaped tires grip better due to the ability to conform to the serface it's running on. I would only tape if you gear high and like a lot of streight line high speed.

Untaped tires in no way are better than taped. Taped tires will always have more contact with the surface and a more stable sidewall. And they still conform when taped. No reason not to tape any tires that will balloon.

    I run untaped trenchers and I have 2-2s 5000 20c and 1-3s 5000 25c.

I find the ballooning effect to be not so much a problem with the 2s, but the 3s is a different story.

I guess it all has to do with haw fast your kit can spin the tires.

In my experience untaped Trenchers follow the structure of an uneven surface better than taped ones. Probably not onevery surface, but I have more grip on a the bumpy dry clay track surface here with untaped ones than I had with the ones I taped. The tape does conform, but since it cant be stretched, there is a logical reason that untaped ones conform better in my case.
Again: probably not on every surface.

For bashing on gravel, grass, etc. I like my Trenchers (I didn't tape them) best. When I decide to go high speed on asphalt with a 17T pinion, I switch back to the Talons which are better on hard surfaces anyway.

STRAP THE TIRES!!!!!!!!!.The trie profile does not change whether you are running full throttle or standing still.I swear by it.My pede 4x4 w/ 2.8 trenchers, desperado rims and my merv w/ 2.2 dirt hawgs & Titus rims runs consistent tire dia. all the time.

Tapped my Trenchers on Desperados today. One of my wheels has tons of wobble. Not sure if it is due to the tapping or just having set these up new from the package and foam needs a few hi speed runs to expand out evenly.

    Done deal!

You can but there is more of a chance of the tape breaking loose. Industrial or gorilla tape have stronger adhesive.

Do you REALLY want to un-glue the tires from the wheels, attempt to peel the regular tape off the tires and then re-glue the tires to the wheels just because you skimped on the tape? (Not when it is put that way, right?) Use the gorilla tape. It's not only the glue that is better, but "regular" tape will also split across its width, causing a hump at high speed. GT has much stronger backing.
I know they're having their break there by your brake drums. No, you're not invited.

I used regular duct tape, and it took about a month and a half to have it peel off on tire. Now I have one ballooning tire, which looks odd. They are staying that way, not boiling them again. I will just wear them out and get new ones. When I do, gorilla tape.
