My water cooled slash

Hello:
First at all:

*What’s the best and easiest way to control your temperatures? Gearing, gearing, gearing! We all know this so please let’s not go into a debate here.

I was making a very long run in my neighborhood and my motor was running warm and i stoped to cool the motor. When i stoped i was thinking: how can i make my motor run cool without stooping? and i thougth like water cooling system and this week i made my watercooled slash with parts found in my house.

Now the pics:

The radiator: I found this radiator in a very old heater. I made holes for the cooper tubes





I attached the radiator directly to the chassis with these screws



The water pump: I used a water pump for a computer.(send me a pm if you want more info.)



The motor: i bought a water cooling jacket(send me a pm if you want more info.)





I need to cut a piece of a gearbox because the water cooling jacket didn't fit.



The same history with the rear skid plate:



The chassis: When I put the water pump, I need to change the place of the receiver box.

Sometimes the best ideas start out looking like a frankenstein experiment. Keep track of your gearing/motor temps/outside air temps/run time/etc. You would have to compare it to say no cooling system or a heat sink with fan etc to see if your idea is viable. At this point no because its too big and wouldn't last too long. And most guys don't want water on the track if its inside.

Motor:140F°-160F°
ESC:120F° - 130F°
Gearing: 90-23
Ambient Temp: 24-25 C°( i dont know how much is in F°)

With watercooling system:
Motor:110F°-125F°
ESC:125F° - 130F°
Gearing: 90-23

A simple one pass copper tube with cooling fins just radiating the heat might be all that's needed and save weight. Also where its mounted while might be good for airflow might not be so good when hitting stuff like walls or trees other cars etc. Cool idea but with the way I drive Id break it.

wow man... this would be great out here... Iraqi desert gets a bit toasty. Yeah maybe a one pass smaller radiator might work better, that just means there are more options to this guys great idea! You can't knock this idea without acknowledging the good in it, come on guys!

I dont think there is anything else out there for rc cars that lower the temp that much by using water, this is very unique,
you should have people pay you on how to build the design!

yes, i made a little prototype and tested on the car but i dont see a lot of difference in the temps, just lowered like 5 to 10 F° with the same conditions.
The radiator is mounted before the bumper attached directly in the chassis and today I accidentally crashed and just the tubes moved a bit to the front

yes you can. You may want to check out the dragster rims. They are the same tires, but the rims have a wider offset for more stability. Do you have a link for where you got the pump and water jacket?

Here is a picture taken from the top of my car

I moved the receiver box and the ESC and I made 2 holes to the chassis for put the water pump.

The radiator have a space between the bumper, the bumper mount and the radiator.

If i crash, the radiator isn't going to be affected, because is not attached to any crash absorbers like the bumper or bumper mount.

If you search for 'water cooling jacket' you will see many that are used on RC boats, you may find one that you can use, tinker with or modify to your likings.

I am thinking you can mount the radiator anywhere you want, the amount of air flow may not be extremely important as the cooling fins are dissipating the heat on their own. You could even make up two Water Cooling Jackets one for the motor and the other could have a removable top and be sealed at the bottom and you could put dry ice in it to chill the circulating water
I do not know how fast that water circulates through the radiator and around the motor but remember the water has to move slow enough to pick up the heat from the motor and slow enough through the radiator to then cool that water.

Today, I was making my water cooled ESC

I made like a sandwich with the: esc cooling fins, a computer cooling fins, cooper tubes and another computer cooling fins(in that order):

Maybe you are thinking "Why only use 2 tubes for the esc and not 3 or 4?"
The answer is: Because when I put the tubes, the tubes have a very sharp curves and the water can't move fast and the pump can't push the water with that power.

Thats it for today.

Next time i am going to buy 3 small fans. (2 for the radiator and 1 for the ESC)

hmm i would try to see if you could mesh the heat sink fins together to better help heat disipation from the esc to the colling unit above

If you wanted to add even more cooling to the system you could get a 5v DC computer fan and mount it behind the radiator to pull air through it. If you wanted to conserve some space you could also look into retro fitting a computer CPU water cooling unit. They are a little more compact and already have a cooling fan setup mounted to it.
