    New to lipos please help!

Hey I am looking to buy a 2s lipo for my traxxas rustler and I no very little about them! I need some pointers. Can i charge it without staring at it the whole time? I read my friends battery on the bottom and it says do not leave unattended. Do i have to watch it till it is done charging? haha.

    Thanks

You don't have to stare at them. I just check on them periodically while charging. I definitely recommend getting a lipo bag(s) to charge them in. When not being used, I store them in there as well.

I have 2 bags and put both my batteries in the smaller bag, then insert that bag in a larger bag. Makes me sleep well at night just in case anything were to happen.

My friend tells me that he just plugs them in to charge before he goes to bed then he wakes up the next morning and uses them. Is this safe, is it okay? he does not have lipo bags either.

Putting them on the charger before going to sleep is a good example of charging batteries unattended.

You do not need to stare at them, but you should be in the same room or the next room and periodically checking them.

Everyone has their own methods and we all can take different risks. Charging lipos isn't a risk I'm willing to take when they are in my house. I wouldn't be able to live with myself if anything happened to my house, wife or children due to my negligence.

The precautions are worth it in my book in the event something goes wrong.

I wouldn't leave them in plugged in all night and without a bag. I'm a rule follower though and charge in the bags and keep them in a cool dry place.

In my mind, the warnings on batteries are there for a reason and they can explode/catch on fire. Why take that chance?

First thing I would recommend is to do some more reading.!
Lipo can be very destructive if used or charged incorrectly
There are some basic rules to follow I would link the thread but can't do it on my phone.if someone could that would be
    Good

I'd also get an old toolbox or metal can to store LiPos between runs after they're charged. Either that or get one of the large LiPo bags. Like Mark94 said, family and home safety first!

Another 'safety measure' you could utilize would be a battery-powered smoke detector. If you have a specific charging area for your LiPos, you could mount the smoke detector just above it. That way, you could be alerted of a dangerous situation that may occur between the times you check up on it.

Of course, as many others have said, those LiPo safety bags/pouches are an excellent investment. Using them while storing and charging your LiPos is highly recommended.

Finally, you should charge them in a 'safe' area; such as on a concrete garage floor, away from combustible materials. I know some people even use cinder blocks turned on their side to create a contained area in case of a LiPo fire/explosion. Just use common sense, follow the precautions, and don't go to sleep like your friend.
