    Thinking about getting a villian

There is a used villain for sale local to me. I think I can talk the guy into it for 50 bucks. Is it worth it? Never had a boat before so I dont really know much about them, but I am considering getting one. Thanks

If it's in good shape, $50 should be a pretty good deal.

The Villain is a very fun boat, and would be great if you wanted to get into R/C boating. I love both of mine .

How much do they normally go for used? Is there anything I should be aware of when I go look at it. Any broken parts that I should look for?

I sold a Villain lV last year for 140. But it had new motors and new ESC . If it's a Villain EX it's a great deal , as far as broken parts just look at the hull for cracks and the drive shafts for excess play . I've 2 EX's and a 7.2v Villain , They are a lot of fun . If you get it you can pick up parts on ebay .

The villain IV , is not that fast of a boat only about 12 mph . It is faster then the Traxxas Blast . I put the EX set up in one of mine and got about 25 mph out of it . The villain IV is 7.2 or 8.4 v an the EX is 14.4 or 16.8 v . Just something to think about , But 50 is not a bad price . PS . The villain IV has smaller props than the EX has larger props . If you get it I would change props , more speed with the EX props . Hears a few Pictures of mine on 16.8v

It would definitely make a good project. I like the Villain IV for it's scale appeal, you can do a lot of little mods to make it look realistic, then underneath do whatever you'd like.

Villain EX conversions are pretty cheap and the Titan motors run about $20/ea. just make sure to get a normal one and a reverse rotation, also make sure you don't get the 12T one (not for boats). The EX motors and ESC with a decent set of props will get some decent speed out of it and probably 5-8 minutes of full throttle run time on a decent set of NiMHs. I did a twin brushless setup when I had my 7.2v Villain and it would run 30 minutes or so to a pair of 5k LiPos, I can help you out with the conversion if you're interested. The Villain is a fun boat and very stable and easy to drive if you keep the power to a reasonable level. If you can score one for a good price that just sweetens the deal!

I have a Villain IV running 14.8 volts and its a big difference over the stock 7.2 setup.. Its fun enough this way where you can get into a bit of trouble.. My setup is out of an ESavage.. twin 550's and 14.8 esc.. couldn't beat the price... I have also changed to counter rotating props that are much more aggressive than the stock traxxas ones. Easily in the mid 25's and has touched 30 when the water was just right.. for around 50 for a good clean boat, its worth it... Not too expensive to upgrade the electrics..

I don't think it well run those speeds with out brushless , the Spartan runs about 30 out of the box with standard batteries .

One thing to keep an eye out for when buying the IV version is the motor mount(s). The older Villain IVs had separate motor mounts for each motor, whereas the newer ones had a single aluminum plate for both motors (this is the preferred mount). The single aluminum plate was used because the original setup tended to flex, especially when the motors got warm; this lead to stripped drive gears.

While it is not a deal breaker, it's something to keep an eye out for so that you know to pick up an aluminum motor mount as well.

Is THIS what you are talking about? Are there any other motor mount parts I should look at? Thanks.

I had the original mount on mine and while it worked fine, there was a little play in it. Never stripped a gear but I could see how that would happen. Spent $10 on the traxxas aluminum mount a while ago and mostly for the added cooling to the twin motors.. not sure if it made any difference but it looks better as well..
