General information for all.
I wanted to start this thread because i always have some general questions, that i have a hard time finding direct answers to.
So i started this thread in hopes i could get more direct questions i run into on usually a daily basis.
1st question, i stripped my front diff when i installed a alum bulkhead. when installing it i noticed that from the factory my merv came with a small shim on the input gear of the front and rear diffs.
i've looked and asked around and nobody seems to know or ever seen this before.
i am going to keep the alum bulkhead, i just ordered a new diff and pinion gear (it was the one that was stripped) and just wondering if anyone knows if i should keep the input gear shimmed or just shim the ring gear. and what size would this shim be? (the input gear shim)

By input gear you mean pinion gear. Correct?

yea.. it come out of the box brand new with a shim on it both front and rear.
after i put on the alum bulk head and heard it starting to strip i took off that shim drimmeled out the inside hole so it would go on the ring side untill i got some shims for the ring side, and now that i got the shims for the ring comin in, i would like to know about this original shim on the pinion gear that come factory like this.
if i should put it back even thought i made the insde hole bigger, and if i should but should get the correct shim, what is the correct shim size for the pinion gear in the diff?

Can you take a pic of where you ground it out and post it. Having a hard time picturing it

From your description, i think you look for 4mm shims (inner diameter).
Search for Tamiya 53586 4mm Shim Set (0.1/0.2/0.3mm, 10pcs each)
or Hot-Racing part no. W4X
Great thread idea, btw.
Hope it gets traction like the "What did you do to your MERV today" topic.

The pinion is a 4mm diameter but with a new ring and pinion you probably wont need it.

The hpi z695 shims would fit too. I use those for my axles and under the rocker arms

here is the pic of the diff shim on the pinion gear. i bored the inside hole out to put the shim on the ring gear after installing the alum bulk head.

here is a pic of my makeshift burn wrap, after result of trying to soder traxxas connectors to my lipo, needless to say i didnt do so well, but i tried and tried and burned and burned untill i finaly got it, (dont give up if at first you dont succssed...)

That was a big diameter shim. I wouldn't run one with the new ring and pinion

it come stock on the pinion. i think the pic makes it look bigger than it is, the outside diameter is the excat same size as the edge of the pinion gear.. it sits flush with the pinion as far as diameter

Maybe Traxxas shimmed it specifically for your stock bulkheads

if traxxas done it, then if i stay with the alum bulkhead i should take it off, and shim the ring then right? and if i go back stock then i should reshim it correct?

I wouldn't use it. It might of been specific to the original ring and pinion and/or for the original bulkhead. But with the new bulkhead and new gear set just shim the ring gear

sounds like the most logical thing.. its crazy though how i've looked all over the net and no where does it say anyting about these shims

Well with photobucket once you upload a photo you click on img,that copies the photo -then in the post control V to paste. Not sure about flicker

correct me if i am wrong, but on my controller i can set the steering expo or trim, and once i have set it i can put the multi function nob back on what ever it was on and whatever i set the other to it will save it?
and what is it i need to se that makes it turn more when i turn the wheel on my controller

When you set the expo -it stays set - you can do steering, turn the knob clockwise for high speed runs wont be as sensitive to steering changes then turn knob the other way and its back to stock settings. Or program for throttle and its mellows out the hit when you open up the throttle

The other setting is end point adjustment. I am not home at the doctor. When I get home I will tell you how to program that

with the steering expo set and knob full clockwise it decreases steering sensitivity by making the servo less responsive near the center.so on high speed runs if you make steering adjustments they are very small and you won't crash

for steering expo -hold down menu(one green blink)-press set-press set(one red blink)-hold down menu to exit

for throttle expo-hold down menu(one green blink)-press set-press menu(2 red blinks)-press set-hold down menu to exit throttle expo works just like steering expo-on slippery surfaces when you tap the throttle the power is mellowed a bit (less power when you hit it)

ok.. i got it cool. i know it says it in the book, i just havent tried it out yet..
