Gyro for Merv
Have any of you guys used a Gyro in your Merv (or similar 1/16)? I mainly use my car on-road anywhere up to 65 mph and I'm interested in the possible added stability. On amain I see that the cheapest for $42, here: http://www.amainhobbies.com/product_...03B-Tail-Servo
i know that the above 90 mph rustler speedrunners use them and guys on the x01 too
i never see anybody on the internet who used it on a merv
Whats a gyro?
I have a 401B gyro ($12) laying around, from my last order.
I planned to use it mainly for off-road fun, but did not test it yet, as i have not found a mounting space/solution.
If you start to experiment with a gyro I'm really interested in your findings.

a gyro is a box the size of a servo, maybe smaller that is conected to the receiver and servo AND is a big help to keep the wheels straigh when the car is doing donuts! Search youtube on "gyro for Rc" and you will understand.
When a gyro is conected and you grab the car by hand ON, and turn (swing) the car left to right the servo works on reverse, moving the wheels counterwise....
let us know if anyone used it on a merv!!
it should give good things... or even worse! lol
i think thats the main prob they are not used on a merv
the space and were to mount it
if it could be its awesome and gives outstanding handling at high speeds
The empty servo spot would be great.
you got a good point there Cobra
I just ordered the same one you've got, CMD-J. It should fit in the empty servo spot with some double sided tape.
Yeah, the second servo spot might be the best idea. I just dont like to relocate my powerswitch again atm, plus that's the spot i usually cram my parallel adapter/excess wires into.
The gyro is a bit bigger then you might think from the pictures at HK and you have to mount it on end to work.
So you need some height to spare too, thats where it conflicts with my power wires.
Back to the drawing board, rethinking my wire routing it is i guess.
Oh and be carefull with doublesided tape. From what i read a gyro should be decoupled from the chassis, some adhesive foam thingy might be better for mounting.

I'll figure out something. My wires are routed to the rear and my on/off switch is mounted straight on the ESC, so I've got that whole area to play with. Also, my double sided tape is like a thin foam pad. It's only $15 so it's worth the try. Wow, we have the same thermometer.
i am gonna follow this one 4 real
let me know how it will work out guys
and show us some building stuff when you do this

Yesterday I ran my Dirt Hawgs geared at 31/45 or 28/45, I can't remember. On 2s I read up to 150F after a while. I don't even bother to use the dirt hawgs with 3s... only for my foams. I don't like the way the merv wheelies with rubber tires. With the foams it just scoots like its tail is on fire.
Sounds good. 50/25-28 with Dirt Hawgs on 2S for 2-4 packs is what im aiming at.
With a Center-Diff@100K (feel like i could use even harder oil) and reasonable low motor timming and low-medium startup power on the Esc plus lowered/limited shocks i can control the wheelies on 3S somehow, its a fast powerslider with used Dirt Hawgs onroad.
But i know what you meant and the front balloons if too trigger happy are annoying.
Arc or NEU, have to think about it more..
I was hitting 150 on my motor with a Traxxas heatsink with some hard bashing and tried out a muchmore racing ultra high speed fan with same type of bashing motor was running 110!
CMD, doesn't the gyro need to sit horizontal in order to function right? I would think that in that configuration it would be reading the pitch of the car, like tipping forward or backwards. or is it 360 degree capable and it just calibrates itself to it's orientation ever time it's powered up?
BTW take a look at the comments on the hobbyparts page
about drving a drag in straight line at a parking lot
it can be done with a gyro in one straight line
i still become more and more interested in this Gyro stuff
and thinking about ordering one myself
I can't wait until mine comes in. ********* already shipped it.
After further investigation bleeder is probably right! - The gyro has to be mounted flat down, feeling a bit stupid now..
Dunno, how i got the idea it has to be mounted on edge. I swear i saw a pic once where somebody mounted it that way..
I got the initial gyro idea from a thread on a german rc-forum. The guys there experimented with a gyro on the throttle too. To get "mid-air control" or something crazy like that, cant remember all details. I recall it didnt worked out.
But they had great results with the gyro on the steering channel onroad and offroad.
Thanks for the links Mossie! The video on hobbypartz is unfortunately not viewable from germany, (blocked due to copyrighted music, thanks to GEMA). But i could see the the YT video.
I'm going to mount mine in the spare servo spot. I'll use something between the chassis and the gyro to minimize vibrations, and i'll use foam double sided tape between each surface. I'm going to need a futaba splitter to run the gyro and my LEDs at the same time.
i did read that how you mount it is important Cobra
and you need to tryout whats best
i will follow this topic and seriously thinking about doing a gyro tryout myself
also ordered one a min ago
Pro GD-4 RC Car GD4-Gyro
Keep this updated. I want to know how well this works.
will do !!!! order will be shipped today but takes 7 to 14 days to get to the Netherlands
i think you will be the first one CObra with try outs and conclusions
from what i have been reading is that a Gyro will give you a more and better straight line at a drag or speed run
we do like to do both and your a speed runner too from what i have been reading
so once again let me know how it work out when you get your Gyro
keep me posted M8 4 real
my big respect to you master
Guys so what happened with the gyro???? Did it work??? Say something please
i am still waiting on my Gyro , so i can not tell you one single thing about it
i will when it arrives and i install it
i think , no i know Cobra and cmj will do the same 4 real
I received a gyro from hobbypartz yesterday, installed in the extra servo spot.
Paired with a savox servo (which was too small to fit without a small bracket, but works great), it seems to help going down the road and hitting misc bumps and such.
I did encounter some wobble when I did any quick steering, though I didn't have enough time to mess with the gain to see if it would fix it as my batt died. I also only tried on dry pavement, I'll try on wet pavement later if this whole mess south of Florida keeps moving north.
I'll get some pics up later when I get back home.
I would think it would need to be centered in the chassis to work properly
this is sounding good i wonder if it would help you from rolling it any?
I would think it would help keep it planted on the ground. When I roll on pavement it's because I lose traction and slide the rear out.

Where is the center of rotation in a MERV?
Dead center in the chassis, between the front wheels, or somewhere in between?
ETA: do these gyros measure angular velocity/acceleration?

Heres the pic:
the story with centered to the chassis is not true
i have been doing lots of home work on the gyro before decided to buy one
almost every gyro can be mounted like above pic and in some case like the HPI on you even can mount it on the site of the chassis if you want
Great stuff Nulllogic and it seems like we got the same Gyro
i am still waiting for mine do !!!
BTw to answer your question about the acceleration angele is NO
a Gyro is measring sideway force and not downforce
there are some gyro who can do bot but then you got a gyro for helistuff an digital which are 300 euro
an a lot bigger then this one you got now.
try to tweak it and look at you tube movies i have seen lots of vids there and it never worked out the first time and need to tweaked out and try outs
