servo issue. need upgrade. any suggestions?

i got a cheap traxxas 2056 in my slash now and it works but i need/want more speed and torque. i went and bought a hitec hs-5645mg servo that was suppose to be faster and it had twice the torque but when i plugged it in it was slower than my traxxas servo. i went back to my lhs and tried the same servo and the same thing. i even went to another hitec that was suppose to be even more and just barely made an increase. i looked on hitecs site and i think it said that the digital servos could be programmed with another machine of some sort for more speed and crap like that. i just want to throw an upgrade in it and have it work better, not worse. maybe a different brand servo. anyone using aftermarket servo that they didnt have to do anything but install it?

I have two 2 wd Slashes and my stock servos have never given me any problems. They both turn great and seem to have plenty of torque and speed. Does yours turn slow?

If you put in a genuinely fast servo, something .10sec/60º or faster, it will be like you bought a different vehicle. The 2056 has too little torque (80oz/in), and poor holding power, along with flexy plastic gears and really slow speed (.23sec/60º.) If you upgraded to even a Traxxas 2075, you'd notice a dramatic difference. Other good choices on the cheap are the EXi D124 or the Solar D652. They're both Futaba splined, so you wouldn't need to change any other hardware, just drop in the servo.

If you have a bigger budget, the Savox servos are very good and relatively affordable. I'm running a Savox SC1257 (.07sec/60º, 139oz/in) in one of my trucks and it's fantastic.

Savox is a good company that makes good servos. When I was at my lhs last time a guy told me that hobby king sells a metal gear servo (0.08sec/110oz) for $14. I haven't looked on their site yet to find it, but he let me drive his truck for a bit and there was a huge difference. Only thing you're giving up is the waterproof case on the traxxas servo, but there are ways to waterproof electronics

I have 2 of these and they're noisy as heck but I like how they power the front wheels during hard turns.

I wonder if the internal BEC (I'm assuming you have a VXL) is not providing enough power to the servo. It would also be much worse running a 3S lipo too.

Both of my Slashes came with the 2075 servo and they both turn very quickly. Have you checked to make sure that with the servo disconnected that there is no binding in the steering linkage?

yes. but even if there is a little binding, a faster and more torque servo should be faster and turn good even with binding.

Hitec makes a HC-7955TG servo with 250 oz torque, .19 speed at 4.5 volts and 330 oz torque, .15 speed at 6 volts. I have not used them but my son has one in a 1/8 scale truck by another brand and he has been pleased with it, just not water proof, I think he said it even has a Titanium gear.

i tried 3 different hitec servos and all had the same result except for the highest torque and speed servo which was just as fast as my 2056. im thinkin maybe programming or the vxl3s esc doesnt like aftermarket servos

You have other issues going on.. the esc won't like traxxas over another brand..the Hitec servos that you tried are not very fast and aren't really suited for the slash.. I run the 5645 in my Tmaxx.. It doesn't need to whip the wheels around.. Honestly the best bang for the money is the 2075 traxxas servo.. Its very quick and waterproof as well.. the 2056 that you had in there is going to be faster than the Hitec's that you ran, but not very strong and can't center well at all.. Go with a digital like the 2075 or the Savox... The 7955 hitec is just overkill for a slash..

I don't recall if you tested the servo's without connecting them to the linkage or not.. but there is no way the 2056 will be as fast as most of the others.. Either binding issue or output of the esc is too low.. The 2056 draws very little current compared to all the other servo's escpecially digital ones.. They are power hungry..

ya all the hitecs i tried at my lhs were digital but they were rated with over twice the torque and faster speeds using the same voltage. i did have all the linkage disconnected from all the servos including my 2056 and my 2056 was fastest. i tried a 2075 and it was just as fast as my 2056. so maybe it is a voltage output issue with my esc? isnt my 2056 and the 2075 digital too?

thats pretty nice price. im just gonna stick with my 2056 for now cause it still works. i added a proline bellcrank that helps a little so we will see. thx for that though.

The XL-5 ESC can handle the power hungry JRZ9100S with zero issues. You do need to turn the steering travel down so it doesnt bind the servo and heat up the BEC. If the XL5 can handle that servo the VXL should easily handle less powerful servos with no issues.
