On-board is very light, I used to have one but now I have a hand-held so I can use it on my 1/16 VXL too.

I would go hand held so if you get another car you can use it on that one also.

Anyone have any suggestions for hand helds that work good but don't break the bank?

I would say handheld too, but I would make sure you get a decent one. I just bought a cheap one and think it was a wasted 12 bucks. It showed my t maxx running at 368 which I believe is impossible so I do not think it is even worth being a paperweight.

Def get a hand held. I bought the traxxas on board temp gauge and it's off by almost 100 degrees. I do have it mounted in the correct spot on the head and it constantly reads over 300 while the hand held reads 220-250.

I have the Duratrax FlashPoint Infrared Temp Gauge. I've had it for 5 years now. Still works like a charm and have yet to replace the battery.

bougbht a hand held temp gun at napa yesterday for NEW (whos name we shall not say) X truck lol seems to work great and was on sale for $50 with a black case. have a onboard one on my tmaxx and i dont think it works real well, but its feather light. mounted it where the stock fuel tank used to be. when weather gets better i will test both and see which is accurate.

I have a dynamite infra red handheld, and the traxxas onboard. It's weird that people have had problems with the traxxas one. After my own testing I have found them both to be within +- 1degree of each other. I love my traxxas onboard temp gauge. I use it daily on multiple trucks, instead of using the supplied adhesive backing i use little strips of velcro. For me personally it's a must have.

I'll summarize my argument of on-board not being accurate: for taking the temperature it is very accurate. However, on our engines the acceptable place to take the temp is the glow plug and the on-board takes the temp outside and it can vary depending on where the probe is located: closer to the exhaust, higher temps and vise versa.

Yup. great temp gauge. I have one too. Very accurate. I like O'Donnel TGX1 temp gauge/stopwatch combo and comes with a nice nylon case for about $40.00. Anyone have one? Comments/feedback please.

I have the same one and haven't replaced the battery either. Its pretty accurate and a must have. To be honest, I run telemetry on most of my r/c cars and trucks so I can check the temps on the fly literally. I use the handheld to verify the readings and for the couple of cars that don't have the better system. I'm not a fan of the onboard systems for no other reason than the batteries don't last long enough when using the trucks a lot..
