What kind of motor temps w/ 2s or 3s lipo? & what pinion/spur?
I went to the RCX show in Long Beach, CA. this past weekend! And needless to say, it was awesome! I purchased a couple of Thunder Power 5300mAh 2s 65C lipo battery packs ($75 ea.) while at the show. When I got home I charged up a pack & went for my first lipo run. What a difference over the stock 3000mAh 7 cell NiMh! My 4x4 Stampede is completely stock, except for big bore alum. shock caps & 50wt. shock oil. I know Traxxas supplies a 17 tooth pinion gear for high speed street driving, but do not recommend off-roading with the 17 pinion. With the extra power from a 2s or 3s lipo pack, would it be safe to run a 12 or 13 tooth pinion with the stock 54 spur (for off-roading, bashing, etc.) using the stock Velineon motor/VXL-3S esc combo? I want to make everything stay as cool as possible, so I'm going to get the Traxxas fan for the VXL-3S & probably some heat sinks for the motor in the near future.
What kind of motor temps are you guys getting? What's the highest temp that is still considered safe? I've heard both 180 & 190 degrees??
What pinion/spur combo are you all running with the stock motor? Please specify if you're running 2s or 3s lipo.
Thanks in advance!!
ran mine all stock with a 3s lifepo 9.9v once without a heat sink. it got up to 180 so i shut her down. that was on 70% pavement 30% grass. i think 180 is the limit
now i use traxxas esc fan, ezrun motor heatsink and fan, 9 tooth, 3s lipo. im runnin about 130
Gearing down will help your temps. You want to make sure to keep the outside (the area you take the temp reading at on the motor) under 180 because inside the case where the heat is being made is probably 10~15 degrees hotter. If you get a heat sink do NOT take readings on the heat sink take it on an uncovered portion of the motor if you can.
So running a 12 or 13 tooth is probably out of the question then, huh? It sounds like that would just increase temps. With the extra umph of the 65C 2S lipo it seems to reach top speed incredibly fast! Guess I was hoping to put a 12 or 13 pinion in there for a little more top end. So no on else is running anything bigger than the stock 11 pinion (w/ the stock Velineon motor) & still achieving safe motor temps?
no dude i was talking to my hobby shop guy and he said no more then 160 on the temp on the stock system so i would be getting some fans or changing the gearing

+1 on that man it will go into meltdown

I now run a heat sink/fan on motor, and have an esc fan on order, with a 9 and 10 tooth pinion aswell. I run my fan off a 1200 mah stock merv battery, spins it faster than a 9v battery. I hope after all of this, the stock system will be able to handle my trigger happy finger and the 30+ celcius weather on its way.
