Oh boy. Vxl has heat issues on 3s and a Mamba monster is way to big. Most run the MMP and I they the 3900kv. You want a 4 pole setup.
Simply the best. The beautiful Traxxas SRT and TCP

I also like the vxl esc/motor on 3s.

On another Slash I hav an MMP/vxl motor that I run on 2s and 3s with no problems.

Last week I ordered a Viper esc/4600 system that I can't wait to try in my Slash... On 3s.

VXL is the best for me right now, but heat issues yes, you will get them running constantly for about 20 minutes on 3s.
i geared my rustler 31/76 for topspeeds and get about 70mph top, but 5 minutes and my motor is 180*...
with proper gearing you will stay within 150-170*

Do you have the stock XL-5 system? Motor and ESC? If you do, try the PowerUp program from Traxxas. You trade your old ESC and motor in and pay about $100 or so dollars and you got yourself a new brushless combo.

If your worried about max just load on a Capacitor bank with the 3s so you won't spike the ESC
