    Best Tire and Wheel combo

    Howdy!
I bought a newer XL-5 Stampede(6 months ago) and tires kinda suck for traction and all.(Me a bit older and such)
I don't know aberrations that you all use....(been reading threads and such)
So please explain it for my old understanding. (Newbie style with links and such...like to a child and all)

I want the best tires for 'on-road' and 'off-road' use that does not 'wear-out' quick and has good traction.
My old 20+yr Rustler has them and I would love to do the same on this newer Pede!

Wheels...Dunno....Black would be nice or red...but I can paint them.
No fuss issues and what not....Tires are my goal now. (2.8 size)

Very Limited budget and such. (need an 'edge' when racing w/my stock Pede)
    Plus, looks...LOL!!

I would get Proline Trenchers on Desperado wheels if you want an all round wheel/tire combo. Just look for them on www.ebay.com or at you local hobby shop.

    +1 to peters suggestion.

Are you still runnin the XL-5 and do you know how long you would be running it for? I only ask because if you plan on going to brushless power in the near future then the trenchers and desperados will need purchasing separately so that you can tape the trye begore mounting them on the wheel. But if you are staying on brushed for a fair amount of time (dependant on how much you drive your truck a week) then that shouldnt be a problem.

Basically (in case i have confused you a bit there) when you are tunning brushless power the tyres can 'balloon' this means that when you hit the throttle the tyre will try and pull away from the wheel, but because of the glue they will stay attached (hopefully lol) this will make your wheel look like it has a black pizza around it!! (search youtube for 'rc tyre balloning'). Putting tape such as gorrilla tape, duct tape or other similar strong tape will stop that from happening and save your tyre from splitting.
So effectively you dont want to be buying premounted tyres for your XL-5 now (brushed doesnt have much of an issue with ballooning) if in two months you are goin to go brushless cause then you will have tyres that will just suck! (no matter what tyre they are).

Hope this is clear - if not then ask any questions and the answer will appear im sure .

These guys got it going on. The 2 combo's, well 3 that i have run and are great for traction and good tire wear are Masher 2ks stretched on Desperados, Masher 2ks/ RPM Revolvers, & Trenchers/ Desperados. I've run all the combos and they are really great all terrain tire and last a really good while. I drive 50 pavement & 50 off road.

Whats words w/o pictures, right??? LOL Maybe this will help ya.

2.2 Proline Masher 2000 on 2.2 RPM Revolvers

2.8 Proline Trenchers on 2.8 Proline Desperados

2.2 Proline Masher 2000 stretched on 2.8 Proline Desperados

    2.2 Proline Masher 2000
    2.2 RPM Revolvers
    2.8 Proline Trenchers
    2.8 Proline Desperado

If you keep your stock width setup you will need electric fronts and nitro/ electric rears. If you do the wide mod ( Proline Protrac kit ) you can buy all 4 electric fronts. This helps with body roll, better suspension geometry, and you can also rotate your tires front to back. I totally recommend this. If you see this is something you'd like to go to in the future now is the time to buy all electric fronts.

    Hope this helps my friend.

EDIT: Oh and like JoesStampede said: You will definitely want to buy the tires unmounted so you can go ahead and tape the inside of the tires. This will keep them from ballooning so bad. Plus you get to glue them.

I have the pre-mounted Trenchers, and run brushless. What will happen in the long run? So far I love the tires, seem to be ok.

^^^ Nothing really. They will balloon like pizza cutters and give you a couple extra MPH. LOL My first set of tires werent taped want really a big deal. Truck was in the mid to high 30s MPH.

Good info and thanks! I did notice that the 'off-set' from the front wheels are different from the rear wheels. So I have to make sure that I watch for that? And how?

I am keeping my stock XL-5 prutty much stock for now. ($$$ issues and all) I want to go brushless however not anytime soon.

I do like the look of the Proline Trenchers on Desperado wheels! I hope those wheels are strong! lol The tires look and seem like my tires on my 20+ yr old Rustler that lasted and still are good to this day.

I assume, to prevent the 'ballooning' effect, one has to tape the inside of the tire to the foam? And tape/glue the foam to wheel?

I want to thank everyone for your patience and time for helping this ol' 'newbie'....A lot has changed in 20+ yrs. lol

For taping tires, here is a how to: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-BO-dfYz4Rw
You need smaller offset for the rear (Proline part #2730-03) and larger offset for the front (Proline part #2729-03). Trenchers tires are the same for front and rear (Prolne part #1170-00)

The one thing that hasn't changed in 20 years is that there arent any 'what's best' parts, unless you know what you want your specific application to be. I wouldn't be so concerned with what's the best vs ? But more like what's going to best serve me. Being that you want to keep the Titan, I would consider a milder tire than some of the ones mentioned. Maybe even one that's shorter for gearing and longevity purposes. IMO, some talons that have all of the oil run out of them can be fairly grippy in a brushed app, even with an 8 cell nimh pack. I'm talking about the tires no longer looking glossy, even on the areas that aren't tread blocks

    Just a thought...

So per link it's a set of two wheels? Per stock issues??

Still a bit confused about the taping issues and the 'ballooning' issues....Thanks Mr. Peterje60!
I know tires,(2.8 and all) it's the wheels that I have an issue/problem with and 'off-set'.
Needs to be 'bullet-proof' for wheels....tires I can figure out...Part one was great....part 2 of Vid?

Me older and such....I have a bunch of issues always going on!(Sucks for me and such)

The thing about stock TRAXXAS, is that you have a different offset between front and rear rims. Without being able to rotate tires in stock trim, your rears are going to wear out well before the fronts. You mentioned something about budget being a concern. With warmer temps coming, a fresh set of stockers may work for you until you are ready to do the protrac mod which allows you to run the same offset at all 4 corners, allowing you to rotate

Just asking and such....best 'bang-for-buck' and such.(Did not mean to offend you)
In 20yrs things have changed!!!(Back in-the-day...1500 battery was the Top stuff to run)

Tires that lasted was 'un-heard-of' and local shops did not 'like' to sell them.
Course, 20yrs ago...there was no 'Internet' nor this format....

    Bit older, Mr. Oaks.

For taping you only needto tape the inside of the tyre. Simple once you have done one set . Turn the tyre inside out, cut your strip of tape to the required length and put it on the indide of the trye. Turn yhe tyre back the right way and make sure the tape is stuck down properly all over. Then you are done. Put the foams in and glue the tyre to the wheel. All done and good.

One user here (baldydaniels) uses super strong gorrilla double sided carpet tape that will attach the foam to the tape as well but thats not a requirement of taping, works well though!

Honestly i must disagree with Oaks in the talons. Though i havnt used them in a brushed application. I have never managed to get grip off them. Though keeping things cheap for a while by gettin talons to cover you until the next upgrade is a good idea.

Many options here really - its the worst thing about this hobby - what do i buy first/next lol.

Mr BigT. All the tire/ wheel combinations that have been suggested are really good sets. There are others out there that are just as good but are made for different applications/ driving styles. They are all pretty close in price of one another if anything $5-10 difference. If you are interested in going brushless and run the truck in the 30+ MPH its a good idea to tape the insides of the tires. You dont have to i went nearly 9 months on a set of treads and didnt tape them. It really didnt bother me. Since i taped my first set and liked the boost in handling persay i've done every set since. All it takes is a time and patience.

JoesStampede hit it up right there on how to tape them. When I cut a piece i usually cut it about an inch over the lenght to overlap. When you finish and glue the tires to the wheels. Let them dry and another thing that will help out tons is balancing them. All you will need is modeling clay found at Wally World. Spin all the tires on the front 2 and add dabs of clay until they spin freely and stop rocking. This will cut down on a lot of wheel wobble. Doesnt take but a few minutes per wheel and worth it in the long run.

Those are pretty reasonable prices there. I scoped around a few of my places, Amain, Tower, eBay, & the above. They are all nearly the same price w/in a few bucks of each other.

Amain will probably be your cheapest spot. Hopefully you are FreeShip eligible. I'm sure someone on here will find it a few bucks more cheaper. But this is what i found and can help you with

    Desperado / Trencher $55.48 shipped

These guys ship pretty fast to. Prices arent necessarily the lowest and coupons arent the Max like Tower.

Nah, Dont worry about changing the size. They automatically resize them on here. Tons of issues of people not doing it. Just upload them to your fav photo site and paste the IMG code to hear. There is a good tutorial if you need help.

I have to agree that the Talons are disappointing in their grip. They're better than the BF Goodrichs that come stock on some Slash models. Those are the most worthless traction possible with Traxxas Alias a close second.

I'm drooling with anticipation while I wait for my Trencher/Desperado 2.8s to arrive!

If for $ or whatever reason you decide to stick with stock TRX tires for Slash try and pick up the Kumho stock tires. They have a MUCH better tread pattern and actually grip decent for stock tires.

I just picked up Proline Badlands with some JConcepts 2.8" wheels. So now I'll have Badlands and Trenchers and some old Road Hawgs to try on my Slash, Rustler and Pede. After using the stock Alias, Talons, BF Goodrich and Kumho tires I'm looking forward to trying better tires!
