    Question Slash topless

Just notices today that running the slash without the body on reduces the amount of debris that normally collect into the chassis a great deal. I guess the body captures everything the wheels are throwing back and deposits it wherever possible (in the chassis). So that got me thinking some mud flaps on the front wheels should help keep things cleaner opposed to the rear wheels where they just look pretty. The problem is nobody seems to make them...
If you know where to buy such a thing or a mod that I can do please let me know.

Not sure. But you could try a search here for front mud flaps or maybe one on google.

Get an Outerwears "prefilter". Covers the entire chassis from all debris and moisture (water/snow) while still allowing air flow. My friend and I did this and haven't looked back.

Thanks! I might do that. I know about those and I understand that ventilation can be a problem. Well... I will probably try a JConcepts overtray if I won’t be able to mod something myself. Still I thought that somebody out there had already stumbled upon a better solution. Figuring stuff out and modifying our trucks is half the fun so back to the drawing board for me...

I pitched my overtray. It made my chassis compartment an absolute oven! I understand that it's partially my fault as I didn't cut any ventilation holes in it but if I did, it wouldn't keep stuff out! I was running in the snow so having it sealed was important at the time. The Outerwears allowed for both.

Until now I have to admit you have the best solution. I will do some more digging around but I don’t think I will find somebody making front mud flaps for the Slash. Debris would not be so bad if you could hose down the truck and get rid of all the dirt that way but everything rusts! I will get some stainless steel screws and bearings but that is just a partial solution as there are numerous other parts that will rust very easy. I would like very much a slash version let’s say: “Ultimate +” with 100% stainless parts. Now that would be a lot of fun!

At least a kit from Traxxas to waterproof everything. I would pay a lot of money for something like that and I think others would do the same.

outerwears work good but stuff still gets in. i made a set of front mud flaps with some carbon rod, an old dirtbike innertube and some zip ties. i havent noticed a reduction in debris getting in since i put the mud flaps on they just look cool kind of like the rpms more fashion than function

If it is really a concern to you I would buy a roll cage online and run it without the body. The roll cage would protect everything yet not trap dirt

i would have to agree a roll cage sounds like it would be your best option with no body

I run one of my trucks with only the New Era roll bar! Without the body it doesn't have the parachute effect at high speeds.

just make a inner fender out of scrap pieces of lexan and shoe goo them to the inside of the wheel wells. Just make sure you leave enough space so that the tires dont rub.

Earlier in the month someone posted a thread about homemade rear mud flaps. I just forgot the name of the thread. It wont hurt to try to make a set for the front, or inner fenders like Apex said.

I thought you specifically wanted mudflaps, not just an idea on how to keep debris out of your chassis. If you can buy/find some heavy duty screen material (like for windows or screen doors) you can rig that up over the chassis. If you need an idea on how I will tell you my idea on how to fit and finish it. I might even do it for mine.

Get some screen material. Plenty large enough to cover your chassis.

Get some velcro with the sticky back. Take the side that is the hard plastic and line the outside of your chassis with it, like you have to do for the over trays (I think).

Take the screen material and center it over the chassis. Then start pulling it down and "latching" it onto the velcro.

When you go to cut the screen material you want to have enough to fold back over about the width of the velcro that you are using. This way the material will come down from the top, cross the velcro, be folded up and brought back across the velcro again. This will make it double thick there.

Use Shoe Goo or hot glue and attach the sticky back of the "fuzzy" side of the velcro to the screen. If you can sewing it on with heavy nylon thread will help a ton as well.

You know what is hilarious? I just dropped my boss off. What was laying in the parking lot of his apartments? An old piece of screen. It is pretty tore up and has holes in it and big huge staples... But I might be able to salvage enough to do my 'Pede! We'll see!

I think that in the old days people were fabricating much more stuff in this hobby and that we are quite lazy in comparison. So I can’t wait to see the result! Best of luck with your project.

FYI, stainless screws are softer than the original metal ones. Only a real high grade stainless will be a good anti rust, but still softer.
You can make mud flaps, or cut the wheel wells so there is more room for the debris to "escape".
If you are unable to make mud flaps, you can make a type of wheel well that is either attached to the body and hangs down, or you could make something that screws to the chassis and meets the body. Either can be made from a bicycle tire or something a "little" stiffer material. I hate debris in my chassis as well, these were two ideas I came up with, just haven't had time to develop them. Make sure to make them far enough back so the tires don't rub.

Remember, whatever you make, chances are that it will do one or both of the following:
    1) It could make temps rise.
    2) Aid in a ballooning effect.

You are correct, in the old days we did make our own stuff for what we needed. Some of it was functional, but pretty primitive in looks. We didn't really care, we had fun. Kinda funny, a lot of the things they charge a arm and leg for now days, we made for pennies back then.

I am very confused about stainless screws.
I know that in order to make a stainless steel you have to add into the mix something like Ni or Cr or St witch are all a bit soft. The thing is you would believe that would make the alloy softer but that’s not necessary true because adding more carbon and other stuff will compensate adequately.
So the dilemma is why people believe stainless is softer? I think it’s just more expensive.
Do stainless bearing wear faster than normal ones? I haven’t heard anything about that. And is the claim of the people selling stainless screws that you won’t ever have a striped screw again just a marketing flourish?

Be the innovator, make some, be the first. It's so much more satisfying when you make something yourself that works. Opposed to buying something or copying someone else (which there is nothing wrong with)
