Extremely simple just drop in and go. it requires no mods whatsoever....it will be a TON faster than the xl-5.
IMO it is totally worth it....although buying a 4x4 truck is a great idea too, because, well, its 4x4.
You should be able to get the vxl system for around $140 on ebay.

2x4 i wasn't really satisfied with VXL, because its 2x4. Brushless motor is great for a 4x4 car simply because you will have better speed, and better control, with 2x4 you will mostly have your tires spin before you will even get to 1 mph.
Mine constantly does donuts and the tires spin like crazy

2wd slashes you actually have to drive. 4x4 just point it in the direction and go. That's why I like my 2wd.
The slipper clutch is design to help control that power. A properly set slipped can give you the crazy acceleration while reducing wheel spin.
Powered by Tekin. Go Tekin or go home.
YES, it is worth it. If you plan on using the Traxxas Vxl system you simply unbolt the old and bolt in the new, bind the radio to the receiver, put in a battery and off you go. Other systems are almost as easy but you usually have to solder on a battery connector to the ESC.
I did not have the some problems as Agriganosa or Thebuilt said they had. Mine takes off like a rocket with very little wheel spin. I run mine on 2s lipo and find it very controllable and fun. 3s is on its way and that may be a different story.
Good luck with whatever you decide but you will not be disappointed by making the switch.
I may but a Sl4sh with my next paycheck... and I drove a buddys 4wd loved it.
