Exclamation My TQi Project - Separating the 4th and 5th channels to individual buttons

So I got this idea in my head the other day to turn the 3-way diff switch on my TQi in to two separate buttons to allow me to lock the rear, or the front, or both, or none. Out of the box you can only lock the front or both (or rear, if you switch the channels around) from one switch. You basically go, "unlocked, front locked, all locked" and well now I've modded it so I can lock them individually:

First I drove around for hours today sourcing these two rockers:

Roughed out the holes using a dremel, then cleaned them up with a blade:

    And here we have it!

I just have to wire it up, and we're good to go!

Lemme know what you think, *cheers

Fantastic, it turns out locking the front, or the rear, or both, or none... isn't possible with the software installed.

I tested activating the front or the rear individually and came up with a truth table as such:

    Front Unlocked : 1 0
    Front Locked: 0 0
    Front & Rear Locked: 0 1

According to that, if I did 1 1 then I would have the front UNLOCKED and the rear LOCKED. It is electrically correct but the software guys didn't take this situation in to account, and thus it defaults and goes back to 0 0.

What a huge pain in the butt!! Now I have two new switches on the remote that.... are useless.

I hate to say it... but told you so.
I was hoping you were right and the TQi was different...

    EDIT:
Do me a favor and throw some pictures of the internals up for us all to see.
Whatever it is I just typed... could be wrong.

Of course you ask me to do that AFTER I sew it all back together hahah!

    I'll get some tomorrow

For now here's how it is out of the box - opened:

Gotta love how they let 4 year olds solder for them:

Those three wires are as follow:

Left to Center = Rear Diff
Center to Right = Front Diff

If you short left to center, when the front diff is locked, it will activate the rear diff.
If you short Center to Right it will unlock the front diff.

You cannot lock the rear diff without the front diff being locked. Software ftl

You can't really see it, but the center wire (black) is the common.

Hahah is there a maximum number of times you can change your avatar on the forums? :P

Certainly didn't offend me man, hope I didn't offend YOU by saying, "yeah neat idea but I can make this work!"

I've moved on and have been working all day on a pan and tilt using the 2080 servo and some SR200 spektrum dealy - proving difficult as the 2080 seems to have a 30 lock, what the heck is that! Lowsy

All of the good ones won't load for one reason or another.

    I didn't take any offense...
Hope you get the camera project figured out.

I was hopping to find the same thing when I did the 2 to 4 channels mod on the TQ 2.4 Link long ago... I was hoping this was going to be fixed on the TQi but looks like it wasn't... I have to say, Traxxas has wonderful electronic stuff, but they fail each time in the small things like this... They have the resources to include 5 individual channels, they don't do it... They can put a LiPo battery on the transmitter, but they stick to 4 NiMh... They still use a red/green LED on the transmitter which is crap under sunlight (blue/red is much better under daylight)... And, so on... They need someone new with an open mind on these things... Even the lights on the new drag tree doesn't work like the real ones... They are always short in change...

I noticed that in the video of the lights actually, funny you mention that.

I was thinking of replacing the remote LED with a super bright white one, just to be that much cooler.

I replaced it with a red/blue and it's great under sunlight:

Could you please post a pic of the battery compartment? And, it's size? I have a LiPo for it in mind...

The non docking station has 4 x AA batteries in the bottom in a 2 wide 2 long configuration (all are seen from the top).
Docking station models have a 4 x AA battery holder like in a nitro RC car (2 are seen from the top).

Thanks! So, the LiPo I had in mind only works for the docking station models...

Yesteday, I bought a TQi 2-channels, no docking, I'll try, but I suspect Traxxas learned the lesson by now, hope I'm wrong...
