Is this a good starter truck?

I am looking at getting an Rc vehicle for my daughter (5 yrs).

My brushed maxx is too much for her even on training mode.

Forget my brushless revo on lipo...

With a single cell and on training mode this would appear to be a good staring point for her.

    Any thoughts?

Go with a 1/16 Traxxas VXL model, they are pretty durable and have the training mode that keeps them under 20mph. I have the Slash and it's pretty fun but grass isn't a place it likes to run. If you're looking to run it in grass go with the 1/16 revo. My 10yo let's the neighborhood kids run his slash and they have yet to break it!

the mini summit would be the better option for any short grass.

otherwise youd be looking at a stampede, or rustler. they also have training modes. and more durable to your 1/10 scale bashing abilities.

i bought a mini summit to see what they were like. well first thing is dont treat them like a 1/10th scale. they wont last.

The minis are great rides for kids.I've got all the mini's and i enjoy the 1/16 Grave digger.I got it for my 6yr old.Has training mode xl5 with 12 turn and i was very impressed with it.It also comes with a book bag to sport at school.
My vxl summit is a blast, but the vxl doesn't like putting around, overheating issues arrive.

Go with either the brushed slash in training mode or the brushless slash in training mode... Brushless goes about 5 mph faster than the brushed on the same battery... JUST DON'T GET A LIPO!!!!!!!!!!!! IT IS CRAZZZZZY FAST!!!!!! I clocked my brushless slash at around 55!!! Not even geared to go that fast!

I would probably say the 1/16 summit, 2s lipo so that she can enjoy a decent amount of run-time, and then just flip the transmission. You're looking at maybe like 10-15mph tops, but a good amount of torque for whatever she wants to put the truck through (grass/dirt/small rocks/etc..). That way when she is ready for a little more speed, you can just flip the transmissions back over without have to make any other purchases

Does the 1/16 summit have a 2 speed transmission?

Not it doesn't, but by flipping two cogs/gears in the transmission it will give you an incredible amount of torque (For a 1/16) and bring the speeds way down, thus making it controllable for the little one, and still have off-roading potential.

My 2 year old attempts to drive (she is learning) my built MERV... but I set it up for her.
I pull my ********* and put in the stock 3M ESC and set it to 50%. Then I flip the transmission gears and install (if it isn't there already) my 50 tooth spur and a 16 tooth pinion. I still use my 2S LiPo's in parallel.
This gets the top speed down to 12mph on 100% throttle, so it should be around 6mph all out in 50% mode.

Due to the inherent weakness in axles due to the drive line angle... unless you want the Summit look, it is cheaper to get a Revo and Summit tires than it is a Summit.
Whatever it is I just said... I could be wrong.

The 1/16 MERV is a better built r/c than the 1/16 Summit.

Same build, just different arms, extenders, bumpers, and body..It is really not much that different.. I personally have both, and like the summit better.

Yes and he will have to trade the Summit a-arms, axles, and drive shaft carriers for MERV ones in order to make it durable. Might as well buy a MERV and a set of 1/16 Summit tires.
