Exploring Buying a Nitro.... How Loud?

I'm exploring the possibility of buying my first nitro truck, but the only thing holding me back is how loud they are. I live in a decent neighborhood and am wondering just how loud these tucks are, so I wouldn't annoy the neighbors too much. I have only run electrics before, so I haven't heard many in person.

So how loud, compared to say a weedwacker, lawnmower or gas leaf blower, is something like a Nitro Sport?

Also, if they are as loud as I am currently thinking, is there any way to quiet them down without a major drop in preformance?

    TIA Guys

this one is a 3.3 with an aftermarket pipe on it

and this one is a stock 3.3 tuned resonator

Its kind of hard to judge for me so would you say its louder than a gas weedwacker?

    Thanks for the vids though.

Also, i heard something about 2-3 chamber pipes and that those make a difference. Is that correct?

they are high pitch so they sound a good bit louder than a weedeater.

a 2-3 chamber pipe is a tuned resonator or a "tuned pipe" they can be louder than some but they just add performance.

as for a gas weedwacker............. i would probably say a little quiter. atleast the traxxas 3.3 engines. some of the bigger ones that get into big blocks and have larger exhausts are probably louder though.

good description........... physically i would say the weed weed wacker is a hair louder, but because of the pitch the rc could seem louder. they do spin like 30,000 rpm's though lol

here is 2 1/10th nitro cars w/ small blocks & race pipes.

the one is not a traxxas car or engine however itll give you a good idea of how a small block sounds.

a weed whacker is a good comparison. they are certainly quieter (small blocks and big blocks) than most gas mopeds or for that matter a 5th scale gasser.

it also depends on the area. when i would walk home from the track you could still hear the 1/8th nitro cars for about a quarter mile especially when a few were on the track at once however if you went to the bathrooms a few hundred yards away at the baseball fields you couldn't hear them at all.

It really all depends on the motor and the pipe.

When I got my N4tec 10 years ago it came with a .15 and baffled plastic pipe. Not as loud as a weedeater. Same for my CVEC z800 pipe with the 2.5 motor. As someone said the higher pitch does make the "seem" louder.

However my 30vg with CVEC RS230 (9.5mm stinger) is sport bike loud.

Is a fart in church loud?
If you are concerned about ticking your neighbors off, then you'll either need to stay away from nitro or find a spot a distance away to play in.
It's much like one of those mini-bikes that are piped or a leaf-blower. Not too bad for a little while but after some time will get annoying.

when i was living in this small town for college, i was outside running my maxx down the road and back just getting it going like 2 blocks down then back (which sucks if you flip, stall, or run out of gas i might add lol). well i guess my neibor across the street and down a house or two was asking her husband about my rc and why it was so loud. well she ended up coming up and talking to me and asking me 5 million question about it like if it really ran off of gas and whatnot.. to keep it simple for her i just said yes its a special gas for them. but it wouldnt be uncommon for people to come out on there porches and whatnot to watch my maxx scream down the road. even the cops thought it was cool lol. but i guess thats what happens when you live in a super quiet town with one traffic light lol

A++. We do lots of camping and nitro drives the other camper nuts after 5 min of running + the fumes that linger around are kinda annoying too.

I can hear my neighbors .18 T-Maxx from inside my house with all the windows closed.

I don't think the neighbors would like it. It would get on their nerves very quickly.

As others have said it's a matter of where you live, where you're going to play with it, and when.

I've been approached by park rangers at parks where no motorized vehicles are allowed and questioned about the awesomeness of my electric stampede. Also take it on walks with my dog, around school grounds, city parks, skate parks, and going up and down my street at 10 at night. While I love the smell and sound of fuel engines of any kind, that sound limits them in ways electric doesn't. And this isn't even factoring in the lack of tuning needed for electric, or the fact that a battery that will last you hundreds of charges is the same price as a gallon of nitro.

I love watching the little nitro buggies zoom around the track though don't get me wrong. Weigh the pros and cons of each heavily before spending the dough.

if you live in a trailer park it can be rather noisy. but when i swapped my stock plastic pipe for a resonator on my maxx it is quiter. also a exhaust deflecter will help too. but like everyone else said it all depends on where you live. just be aware how sound bounces and travels between houses and what not. in between to trailer houses its stupid noisy. no complaints from the neighbors yet in fact there kids seem to think there power wheels and pocket bikes run faster then my maxx.

A nitro engine may be louder when in close range, but the sound doesn't carry as far as a weed-eater's.
The reason for this being that the noise emitted from the tiny nitro engine is, like others have said, very high pitched.
This high pitched sound does not travel the distance a lower pitched sound would.

that was one of my concerns when i went nitro i run mine in my yard and there is a dirt driveway across the street i go to sometimes. I think of it this way if i am running my lawn mower or my weedwacker i'm making about the same or more noise
if I run during the daytime i should not be annoying anyone plus at 25 dollars a gallon for fuel i can't afford to run for a long time
plus you are not going to be running WOT all the time which is most of the loudest running.

I've got a tmaxx and a BL EREVO, both of which I run in my yard and up and down my front street. At WOT the whine coming from the brushless motor isn't all the much quieter than the whine that comes from my nitro. I also have a neighbor down the street who runs nitros and electrics at the same time and it's easier to hear the nitro but not by a huge margin. I guess depending on the size of the electric motor they aren't that much quieter. My mini summit is a lot quieter though.
