Well... I had some time today:


First indication of "there is something wrong"... metal chunks WELDED to the chassis!


Here are chunks of the brushes melted into the chassis.
I think they got hot... what you do think?

I wish I had a camera good enough to shoot inside of the motor... but it just wants to focus on the outside can. Anyway, the brush on one side is really wore... as a matter of fact it just fell out when I touched it with my screwdriver. The other side is completely gone... the square section is gone... half the arm is gone!

The 775 I just bought will last while I get a DeWALT on the way!!

I see no point in taking advantage of Traxxas... I have tortured this RC.
I will pay for my own play time.

Now, if this happend within the first few runs; I would have taken full advantage of the warranty program.

Parts will be on their way shortly.... if it happens again I am going with aluminum cups!!

Is it possible that a locked diff would cause this kind of carnage??
The reason I ask is that upon inspection of the vehicle, I noticed that the front locker was not getting full range due to the linkages hitting each other. This is what I did to fix it:


Surprisingly, the Summit does not do too bad with only rear wheel drive...
it was not capable of doing normal Summit activities, but it still held its own against a 4WD Stampede!

I agree... VERY beefy.
I attempted to hold one down with a 6cm aluminum horn... it wasn't happening.


I have a feeling I am going to be ordering an aluminum servo saver.

I would definitely consider these to be water resistant... every seam and screw has an o-ring.

I do see a single plastic gear, but I am not sure what it does... I am thinking it might drive some type of sensor?? I know that it does not have anything to do with moving the servo horn... it rotates at a different rate.

I just about have the electrical reworked on this rig! Only have to rewire the rear bumper and figure out something tricky to power the light bar... will post final pictures when I get it working reliably.



Light bar installed.


Light bar rewired and liquid electrical taped to keep the light shining forward.


Modified the wiring so it is powered by a single wire coming from the bar instead of two.

I have completely redone the Rx box. I needed to move stuff around to make everything fit... there is a LOT going on in there. Next time I have it open I will try to remember to snap a shot. It is a bear to get everything in there just so in order for it to close without pinching wires. I even had to shorten a few servo wires to make room... it is that tight.


3 amp 6.1v switching BEC wired to a switch on the right and a XT60 glued in on the left.


Sealed around it with some thin super glue... need some thick next shopping trip.


Mounted a switch so I do not have to plug and unplug the BEC battery all the time.

Had to add a side entrance for wires... it got the same treatment as the other one; closed cell foam.

My BEC battery... it will be mounted above the steering servos. My first mounting method failed... tried using blocks of foam, but the dual lock would not stick to it. My next attempt might be aluminum strap... or wood blocks instead of foam.

The GT3B radio... I have been using it as a basic radio for for a while now. I love it! As a matter of fact, I have sold every single LINK radio I have... including the superLINK. Don't get me wrong, there is nothing bad about the superLINK (or the LINK, for that matter), I just wanted the challenge of figuring out a new radio and modding it to my liking.

Since I liked it so much, I ordered up a second radio after the superLINK sold... only to burn out the circuit board while soldering it up. (Note to self: Do not solder while your wife is eating lunch at the same table you are soldering at. She may bump the table and cause you to desolder key components while causing bridges between solder points that should not be bridged.) So... now I have a third on its way... but this one is not a GT3B... it is a GTX3. It is supposed to have the same guts, just a different skin. We will see....

I bought a aluminum steering wheel along with the 3S LiPo to power my GT3B... I like the feel and quality of the wheel itself, but the proper adapters for the GT3B totally blow... the plastic bends like butter against the mechanical stop of the radio. Now I know why they include two.



So, I used the one meant for Traxxas radios... and modified it:

Works like a charm!!

My wife likes this one because it is bigger... she drives left handed.


I painted the "caliper" on the aluminum one.

I will post up the mod and programming process shortly after the GTX3 get here.

Looks like you're making nice progress. Nice and clean. Are those traxxas connectors on the motor? I've been wanting to do that so motor maintinence is a little easier, plus they look cleaner than the bullet connectors IMO. Keep up the good work!

Yes... Traxxas connectors on the motor. I am not sure if that is the reason the Summit felt faster after the motor swap or if it was because the original 775 was on its way out... lol. In either case, I like how clean these look compared to the original configuration.

Did some soldering on the back bumper LED's today.
I am not sure why Traxxas doesn't do it this way from factory...


No mess of wires... simple, clean, effective.


Single power wire going out... again; simple, clean, effective.


I dabbed on some liquid electrical tape. I like to have the light going only where it is supposed to go.

Just be sure to write down a schematic before you desolder the LED's. That way it is a sure thing that it will work when you go to plug it in.... that is what I did. lol

And be sure to keep their polarity straight, they only work one way.

These are the exact batteries I got myself mate...how do you rate them, any good?

I have not had any issues with them... but I think I am loosing some capacity. Next time I drain them down I will cycle them and see. If I were to do it again, I would either go for SMC or SPC's biggest battery that fits. I LOVE run time. lol

Jimmie what I am waiting to see is how you get that disk brake wired into your braking system on your Summit
Come on ya know you can do it just sit down and think about it some if nothing else put a light in it so it lights up when you slam on the brakes
Your second unit is looking a lot cleaner than the previous one. Learn by previous builds comes to mind

Why don't Traxxas solder the wires the way you did, its called time, which equals money, is what I would strongly suspect. Funny thing about that is am in the process of doing that to all my lights as well.

Mechanical brakes wouldn't be all that hard... adding a servo to channel 2... I could even make it so it only works when in "neutral"... darn you! No way... I have way too much to do as it is!


If I had room in my Rx box for a LED processor... I might do it. But there simply is not room. I am fretting over fitting a 10x30mm capacitor in there. lol

I do tend to improve things the second... third... fourth... fifth... (well, you get the idea) time around. With that in mind; you -in no way, shape, or form- have a slouch of a radio system.


It doesn't bother me that they are soldered the way they are from factory.
Gives me something to do.

What it boils down to is that some of my past posts do not comply with Traxxas' new retailer posting rules... and some of my most recent ones where skating on the edge (not on purpose mind you) on being acceptable. KSB could have simply deleted the thread... but instead he is taking time out of his schedule to clean it up so it can stay up for everyone to keep referring to.

Hey now that was NOT the answer I would expect out of another mad man that is always looking to do the improbable which others would deem impossible.
Have not yet used your second or was it the first improvement as looking for a way to incorporate that unimaginable switch that have two of so would end up with 28 channels, so keep me in mind when ya is about ready to sell this go around and will sell de other one off
Oh also just ordered over 100 bucks worth of steering stuff to see what Out of this world 4 x 4 steering I can come up with.
Figured out how to protect the rear steering arms already.
And to think my wife Used to think Bass fishing Tournaments was expensive

liquid electrical tape over the LED connections? BRILLIANT!

I got sick of the LED connections rusting and breaking off so I squished a little silicone grease over mine to repel the water, it has worked so far but i like your idea better. great tip.

Everything looks great Jimmie! That LED setup is brilliant, when it comes to it I'm going to throw some liquid tape on mine also.

That servo is super beefy inside, all the right things and a perfect fit! That's one heck of a servo arm on there too!

This is not directly related to the Summit, but I made some mods to my RC tool box:

I used some thin aluminum bar stock and double sided foam tape... now I have most of my tools readily available instead of needing to dig for them all the time.
