How bad would locking my differential hurt my steering? I know it really makes it hard on a 1:1 truck. Also, how would I do it, or is it impossible?

I have only done it on a monster truck. 5 inch wheels. It doubled the space needed to turn 180 at most speeds but this truck runs a 27 turn motor so it is more of a crawler. is there any particular reason you want to do this? Does it feel like your rear drive is biased to one wheel or something?

I meant to add I have seen threads on changing diff grease can change the action of it making it more "posi" acting. Right now I can't find any specifics on it.

There is a very simple mod that can be done to your diff to lock it....but don't do it.
I did it and I completely destroyed all the gears in my transmission.
I am just tired of getting hung up on stuff. I just bash around my back yard and in the woods, and I am always getting hung up on something because one wheel is off the ground. I think I'll just tack weld the two shafts together at the bottom that come out of the case (not sure if they have a name). I have backup parts if it doesn't work.
To the men and women of the US military, thank you
Yeah Silly puddy works wonders for locking your diff. But yeah your turning will suffer greatly. if you want to make it stiffer just add some thicker grease to it. At least that option you can change back without destroying something![]()
DON'T weld your parts...if you are insisting on doing this I can tell you how to do it with minimal damage to your parts.
Get some talons or something along those lines and run some 19 86 gearing like a stampede. I set mine up that way sometimes it can be pretty fun in a rough area. Ever done anything like that?

Yes thats all you do, but you have to do it just right. (The little spider gears inside the diff)
And it involves dremeling....but your diff will be locked for ever.
I know this is a little off topic. but I run 2.2 pro-line dirt hawgs and they balloon bad. how much will it help my traction if I tape the tires?
Ot - TONS.
upbasher - you got lucky then or you just power slide through it.
Do you adjust the position of the planetary gears so that they mesh across both gears attached to the output shafts? Thats what I was considering doing.
To the men and women of the US military, thank you
I bought a diff lock on a website you just pull the spider gears out and the shaft and it slides in and locks your diff was like 12 bux turning did suffer tho.. But no more one wheel driving faster then the other and spinning my car out anymore, I think it's from hot racing

That may have contribute but I don't think its all that. I run stock duff's, locked different and everything in-between. The gears seem to be casted, not machined so they are going to break.
I like locked duff's, but drive train will suffer on stock parts. No matter what you run the drivetrain will wear out a little quicker.
I say go for it. The locwasher is OK, but wore out and started to act normal again.
The CA glue in different works great but you have to be careful. It puts out fumes when drying and you have to make sure its true when you glue it.

Xxxl 1/5 in the working.
Not as bad as I thought, but you do notice it. I love it tho saved me alot of unneeded sideways action from one wheel spinning faster than the other.. Just remember if you get one you need to thread lock the grub screws that hold your shaft or it will spin freely.

I used to clean the grease out and wash it, drill two little holes the size of the tip on a tube of super glue (one hole is for a vent to let the air out) in the side of the cover opposite from one another and shoot super glue in it untill it comes out the other hole and Bam ! Instant Krazy Locker. It works every time. It does affect the steering a little but you just compensate by sliding the rear out with a little more throttle.
90k diff oil done hehehe
Yea...I would honestly just use thick diff grease, pack it about 85% full (if you pack it FULL it will push out and start gooing out of your yolks. And...are your ready for this...some Badlands. Do some searching on em, they're sworn by for off road stuffs. And they're about 5" tall so they'll give you good clearance. I'm running talons and really heavy grease (Grim Racer speed grease, for marine but works great) in my p2de and only time I get hung up is high centered. It's not a matter of extra parts, if ya fully lock it things will break. If you WANT to fully lock it just get the hot racing thing or put putty in your trans so theres at least some give if things get hairy.
P2de VXL - Summit - Mini 8ight
I just packed it full of the heaviest grease i could find. Its Mystic high temp grease that I use on the bearings on the trailer for my 1:1 race boat. I lost all my set screws for my pinions so as soon as i get some, I will see how well it works.
To the men and women of the US military, thank you
Keep us informedAnd good luck.
When I want heavy oil in the diff I use Bad Horsie diff grease. That is some thick stuff and it doesn't leak out (I should buy stock in their company for all the times I suggested it).
My Black & Blue Rally is faster than your color...
So I should use some thick diff grease to play it safe??![]()
Rustler VXL
Yours goes how fast???
Thick diff grease will definetely be a better idea than completely locking it.
I stole a pinion out of my slash and ran my Rusty today. Packing it full of grease seemed to help a little. It seemed like when I got one wheel off the ground or in a position with no traction, I could finesse the throttle and get enough power to the other wheel to make it work. I guess if I want a crawler, I need a crawler. I'm not sure if it was just my perception or not but it seemed like the effect got less and less. I may have been getting more and more used to it though.
To the men and women of the US military, thank you
You need one of these
I ran one in my Rustler for about a week until I took it out.

Do the washer trick between the planetary sun gears, i used the little washer they have behind the shock screw where u attach it to da tower. Check out ultimaterc rustler section, look up posi diff mod. I run trenchers and its made a big difference in the loose stuff.
How thin is people's grease if they are having this issue ? What's the stock weight ?
Mine had just a little light weight grease in the corners... not doing anything for the gears, so stock they have pretty much nothing in them.
To the men and women of the US military, thank you
Eek. Mine locks up great. Can't remember what I used though lol.
Washer mod here; like it. Really good 'posi' effect. You will need to replace the washer every so often though.
I run 500k weight in mine and it is hard to control in loose, flat dirt, such as a baseball diamond or open field. I usually run in sand and thicker places with brush and grass and 'heavy' dirt so the posi traction helped. I can still spin just one tire from time to time though.
