Serious tuning issues
I've had a terrible time getting my 3.3 to hold a solid tune! Today I took it out and set all to stock and tuned idle speed, then HSN to performance then LSN to pinch test and it ran okay for a few high speed runs. Then I'd have problems with low performance or idleing being bad. I had times where it did'nt seem to respond to throttle input and then issues starting and remaining started. No matter how I tuned or adjusted it never ran right. Afterward while the engine was still hot I check compression and it still pinched at the top of the sleeve with GP in. I have no idea what's wrong. I got this engine 2 weeks ago! When it idles it sounds erratic sometimes and fine others. My last problem was it idled high and at throttle pull it lowered the revs and then increased!?? That's when I gave up.
Any help would be awesome.
The stock carby is pretty junk really.
How hot is the engine getting? What ype of plug are you using? Which % of nitro fuel?

in tough tuning issues better to follow these steps to help your engine/ carb getting back ok as long as it's still new :
- clean the air filter throughly, dry it before installing it back.
- drain down your tank, fuel tubing, carby from the fuel and place a fresh fuel.
- drain your engine and carb from fuel and add 2-3 drops of after run oil inside them. leave it for a night.
- put on new glow plug.
- get back to factory settings of the carb.
- if the weather is cold outside, wait for a warmer as you could, and befor starting you truck put a hair dryer over the cooling head for 2 minutes.
I had a similar with one of my Maxx's and come to find out it was the carb. Had to replace it, lucky I had one on the self. Threw it in and no problems since.
I've been having the same problem with my jato until I found out that it was due to the idle speed needle. It can be kind of tricky. My jato was idling really high at first can I couldnt figure out why. I kept on turning the idle speed needle down but it seemed to make it worse. The car would start to creep forward even faster and start to even rattle as if it wasnt getting enough air. Then I removed my air filter to look inside the carb as I adjusted the idle and notice that as I leaned out my idle needle. The slide would only shut so much then stop, but at the same time There was still a cap and I was still able to turn then idle needle more. So I richer the idle until I saw the slide start to open up again, then I leaned it until it wouldn't move anymore, then richen it by a hair. After that I started the engine again and fine tuned the idle with the throttle trim and now my car idles perfectly and she sounds great! I hope that same what made since to you.
Thnks for the replies; I dont have a temp gauge (need one). But I'm using 20% and a medium plug. Before I had this problem I adjusted the carb input to point forward like the stock Jato. I don't know what I could have screwed up but its got problems...
