Dye question

Is there a way to prevent the RIT dye for taking to certain parts of the chassis?

Like for example if i wanted to leave the TRAXXAS grey when i dyed a chassis black... can that be done?

I have found that dye will not penetrate CA glue drops. This should be independently verified. I don't know if dye will bleed under the CA glue.

^ hmmm, i might have to glue smear my broken 1/16 summit chassis and try that...


I have thought about it every time i dyed a chassis but i just dip it black and don't worry about it.

I test-dyed some used chrome All-Star wheels. Where the CA glue had been messily dripped on the wheels (my bad!) the chrome did not darken.

When dying yoyos I use standard Elmers glue. Put it on semi-thick but make sure it has plenty of time to dry. I have used it on more yoyos than I can count and it works every time, even when I use acetone in my dye mixture.

This is just one I used glue on. Were its bright orange I used thick drops where you see slight orange I used very thin layers.(this was solid white when i started).

and the boiling water doesn't mess up the glue? i would figure the boil would almost obliterate the glue...

You don't dip into boiling water. You boil the water to let it activate the dye. Let it cool a little bit, not too much, then you dip. As I said just make sure the glue is COMPLETELY dry. Let it sit an hour or two depending on thickness.
If I could get a white plastic chassis I would do some serious mind blowing with my dye jobs! Toot Toot thats me tooting my own horn

Thanks! When it comes to dye I have been doing it for many years, same with bearing maintenance. Most of the yoyos I do cost between 15-25 bucks, when I get done some have sold for over 200.00. The past few years though I have stopped selling them and only doing them as gifts for very close friends.

LOL I know right? I do have a one of a kind Duncan FHMG worth roughly 700.00 It was a stock FHMG that cost 550.00, then I had my buddy add a custom one off powder coat to it.

What i find too work best is hot glue. put it where ever you dont want the dye too penetrate. doesnt come off untill you want it too, even in boiling water and it is easy too remove when done

Hot glue works great! I only suggest Elmers because not everyone has a glue gun or wants to buy one (even though they are cheap), and most anyone can drop a buck on Elmers.

You might try something like clear contact paper too. Apply it over the whole area and then trim around the Traxxas logo. Just make sure it is sealed well along all the edges. I have also heard people talk about liquid mask when painting bodies, that may work too.

Liquid masking also works depending on the plastic. I have sucecsfuly used, dish washing soap, vaseline and peanut butter. The problem with liquid masking is you have to be careful not to disturb the piece too much. And yes you read that right..Peanut Butter!
