They only make rtr .can find them used on ebay

they have tried
you can buy parts from ebay chop shops if you want to build but suspect you'd spend considerably more on it.
however, if you're going down the route of heavy customization it may make sense as you can tailor it from ground up with upgraded arms, brushless, aftermarket components, etc.
most of us just can wait to take it out for a run! and you've got plenty of opportunity to tear the truck down for maintenance anyway.
just get RTR and upgrade what you want then you have spare parts... all i need is a chassis bulkheads and electronics then i can build a stock summit from all the parts ive upgraded..

I bought mine used for about half price and have been upgrading as I can afford to. However you get it doesn't really matter as long as you get it. This truck surprises me every time I run it.
