Depends what you're doing with the car but that ratio sounds very high to me. I've ran 13/54 and 14/54 on 2S Lipo for offroad track racing which worked well. Best to use a temp gun to find the gearing sweet spots for yourself.

    hi Guido
what the best gear ratio is for your truck,.. depends on how and where you drive your slash.
    you got a 56T spur
for hi speed onroad on asphalt go up to 18T pinion
but on loose sand (beach / dunes ) go down to 12 or even 11

the velinion doesn`t like the heat... get a fan on your esc. ( a cool esc. is a happy esc. )
and like what Mr. Wolf said use a temp-gun for the motor..
if motor gets to hot to touch longer than one second, gear down 2 tooth @ the pinion
    here i got 54T,56T, &58T spur`s
    and pinion`s from 11T, 12T, 13T, 14T, 15T, 16T, 17T, 18T

the fastest setup for me was 58 / 17 ;-) very fast but short driving time, me 2s 4200 LiPo was down in 11 minutes
    common setup is about 54 / 14
in very loose sand (construction area we had 54 /12 but that time we raced with Proline Slingshot`s 17 minutes / 2s 4200

The Velineon motor's rated to 200F without damaging but most try to keep it under 180F. I'm more conservative and keep it under 170F.

i just purchased a new velineon motor for my slash 2wd, and i'm using 23/86 gearing but im looking for more torque. the stock gearing was the 19/90 which didn't do anything. however, i'm looking for a happy medium for dirt and street, moreless dirt. any referencs would be great.

Ouch!! I keep my motor temps below 160F. When temps go above 155F I take action and fix the problem; could be gearing, tall tires, too small of a motor etc...

mrman, I usually run 23/83 gearing on my velineon setups on both 2s and 3s for street running; I don't go off road much with my trucks except at the track. Some guys gear down from their 2s gearing for 3s but I don't. I think 23/83 is a good all-around gearing for the velineon. You said you ran 19/90 but that didn't do anything for you... If I ran off road I'd probably gear my truck at 18/83 or 19/83.
