I have the traxxas slash with a xl5 esc and the titan 12t motor and want to get a better motor. I heard the checkpoint money was good but i really don't know what motor to get. And which # of turns will be better?

The Checkpoint Money is my favorite 19 turn motor. Runs really strong and gets long brush life. However, it's only available as a 19 turn spec motor. This means that it has fixed timing, but it is easy to make it adjustable if you desire.
The Orion Method R series that we talked about last night is a mod motor, has v-angled brushes, and its available in a variety of turns. The Orion is a great budget mod motor, but in my experience, the Money runs a little better than the 19 turn Method R.
The Checkpoint Money has also gotten very scarce lately.
Sending you a PM.![]()
I talked to a guy from rc planet.com and he said to just keep buying replacement titan 550s until i have the money for a brushless system
Well he said most motors aren't going to be that much of a difference so i should stick with the titans
Hate to say it, but that's not even close to true. The titan is a closed endbell RTR motor with bushings.
At the end of the day, it's your choice, but I think you owe it to yourself to buy at least one mod motor and judge for yourself. Figure titan motors average around $25 shipped on ebay and you can get a 15x2 Orion or Checkpoint Money (if you're lucky enough to find the Checkpoint) for no more than $5 more. I guarantee that if you follow the drirections, you will notice a nice performance gain from a mod motor. But like I said, it's up to you. Good luck whatever route you decide to go!
I thought the titan was a mod motor?! It says in the title titan 550 12 turn modified motor.
Well i'll take your word for it and get the orion cause there's no checkpoint moneys. Bu ill set the gears and eveythig right, but how do you break in the motor?
The break-in procedure is in the instructions.
If you go with a 15 turn, I would start with 90/16 and go from there. You may end up going up a tooth or two on the pinion, but that should be a safe place to start. I've noticed that different motors like slightly different gearing some times, even if they're the same specs.
If the weather is decent enough this weekend, I'll try to get some comparison vids between a stock Slash and a 19 turn Method.
Hey, i'm interested in the same thing. I'm looking at the orion methods on ebay, and they have 10t,13t, 15t, 17t, 20t. What would be best? i have the xl-5 controler and have been running 8.4v 3000mah batteries. i know you can get more power our of fewer turns but it shortens your run time... right?
The xl-5 is rated for a 15t? my raptor came with a titan 12t 550 modified.
In further news, i think i burnt up the titan (away from home, ran it through a puddle a time or 2, and didn't have any cleaner to spray the motor out). I'm going to attempt to salvage it by cleaning it out, re-water breaking it in, and lube it up again and see if i can't bring it back from the dead... Lots of sparks right now when it runs
I see a lot of people using the ElectriFly S600 Motors. They seem to last a long time and are pretty cheap.

Well, my titan crapped out, and the hobby shop didn't have any other than titans, so guess what i bought? another titan. lol this time though i broke it in with water and it seems to have made a huge difference from the first time i broke it in... that or the motor had just lost that much grunt in the last few months.... i'm going to try to take better care of this one, keep it cleaner this time.
Breaking in with water will definately give the motor more punch/speed /power whatever but it takes quite a bit of life out of it. You can't have your cake and eat it too. Titans are basically disposeable motors made to keep RTR prices down. Mine lasted about 2months but I was pretty hard it. You can probably just go to your LHS and get a regular old generic RS540 for super cheap and have basically the same performance as the titan.

hmmm... it's starting to sound like i'm never really going to get the truck to where i want it.... I was hoping ~$30 ish a month in upgrades, but it sounds like it's going to be about that just to maintain the truck... oh well, i guess i will have to put a little more into it i guess
My stock Titan lasted about a yr before I replaced it and it still worked just wanted more power. All I did to break it in was drive it training mode at full throttle in really big circles for an entire battery.
Yeah, i did the same thing... made good use of the culdesac. Maybe one day i can advance to the level of going brushless, but we will see. I know you have to have a brushless esc for a brushless motor, but you can still run them on nimh batteries i presume, but will there be a drop in drive time or anything like that to worry about? I can't justify having to spend the money on brushless, plus lipo's, plus lipo charger and such, that's like 300 just to get set up. If that's the case, i'll hand my car down to my son and get myself a new one.
I hooked up a 7cell nmh to my GTB/Velocity 5.5t/7600kv for the **** of it. Went about 1 minute and it stopped cuz the lipo lvc was still set. Then that motor sucked the NMH dry in another 3. Batt was super hot & totally done after that. You might fair a little better with a higher turn/lower kv motor but brushless motors can draw huge amps so you have to be careful using nmh. Your nmh batt garbage pail arrival date will be much sooner trying to push brushless setups. You'd be better off getting a quality tuneable brushed motor I think.

I switched to lipos first, then when I had spare cash I went brushless. Lipos work fine on the xl5 and Titan but nihms aren't very good for a brushless motor. Rather a brushless motor isn't nice to nihms.
Thanks for the heads up about the batteries. Will have to find a good mod motor i suppose.
(warning: Rant) I get annoyed by some of the people making it sound like it's just so easy(and cheap) to convert to brushless. Not everyone wants to spend every spare penny on their cars, or have that many spare pennies to spend. I've seen a lot of threads that start out "What brushed motor..." Get squashed by the first 3 comments telling them they need to go brushless. the slash, while a very well rounded vehicle is still an entry level rc car, and as so a lot of people(including myself) opt for the lesser expensive brushed 2wd version. So, I have an rc, it's a good rc that i can have fun with, i just want to fiddle around with it without dropping $1000 every other month into it like some people do.
