New models that have the LVC ( Low Voltage Cutoff ) yes... Older Xl-5 need to have LVC or LVA added, which is pretty cheap.

I believe the ESC should say Low Voltage Cutoff on the front.

Somewhere on the Traxxas site, I can't find it now, there is a page with pictures of all the different versions of XL-5. It describes how to identify them and which ones have LVC.

You can run 2S but not 3S. If your esc doesn't say "low voltage detection" on the edge, directly under the on/off button you should invest in an alarm. The esc will run lipo without it, but it's not recommended as you can over-discharge the battery and possibly be injured or something else that you don't want to have happen.

traxxasFTW, what about running Nihm 8 cell? I know the titan might not last long. But a few other motors, like the S600 should take the 8 cell. Just wondering what your thinking?

I picked up a new Slash for my grandson and it came with the VX-5. Small print at bottom says LVD (low voltage detection) Also is stated for 2s LiPo not 3s. Switch up to VXL-3s for that and I think there is an upgrade program through Traxxas to do that if you want.
Super fun truck to work on, bash and tinker with, you will enjoy it!
