Looks like I smoked my ESC today....

Recently installed a GoPro mount on my truck and decided to do some high speed runs in a local parking lot

Traxxas 3s lipo 6400mAh
22p/50s gearing




After about 5 minutes of back to back runs, it made a cogging noise and just quit in the middle of the lot

Tried turning the ESC on and off, but got nothing

Tried switching back and forth from Lipo to NiMH mode, but didn't get the usual ascending and descending tones (lights work, but no sound)

Took a whiff and it definitely smelled burnt

Didn't have the ESC cooling fan plugged in, but both the ESC and motor were cool to the touch after the run (37* out today, so no fan needed)

Pretty sure it's toast, but I'll break out the meter and check for sure tomorrow.

Still converting the video footage, but I'll have it up later tonight.

Anyone have a link to the Lifetime Electronics Warranty form?

Smell and/or smoke from your esc cant be a good thing.

Don't need a form just call them they'll give you a RA #, send $40 with the old ESC and poof a new one arrives.

Actually, if you call ahead like tallguy said, you can get it replaced under warranty. I think you have to ask first, i had 2 esc's replaced under warranty, and i had to pay for my third. try it out.

I just assumed that since it's more than a year old (I'm actually running a new ESC and Motor replacment from June of 2010), that I had to that I'd have to go by the form prices and I'm just not sure what the going rate is

I took it a little easy on the throttle since I didn't have a cage for the camera, but I did get a few WOT passes in there

Asking for trouble with that sort of gearing, it was a matter of time before you killed it

Try stock 13/54 gearing if you plan to run 3s

What's wrong with his name? Go Pros mounted on car videos usually come out much worse. This one was pretty good. Can't comment on his gearing but based on his other vids I would say he probably pushes the envelope. Lol.

Original purchase date 3/15/10

I gave them a call and after forwarding the video and explaining the situation, I was advised to send in both the ESC and Motor

Sent it in on Tuesday and just got an email confirmation stating that they replaced the VXL3s with a new unit and that my motor was tested and checked out fine and was shipped out today

How's THAT for fast service!!

This is why I love this company!!

BTW, I'll most likely be putting it up for sale to help fund a new MMP setup

I didn't mount my GPS or clock it on the speed gun for those runs, but I've hit 71mph using the same gearing on 3s
