Joining the Slash 4X4 world. Progress thread.

Bought a Slash 4X4 Platinum roller today. Hope to see it in the next week or so.
Loaded up with all the STRC parts. No electronics or body. which brings me to my first questions.

Motor/ESC - I don't think im going to race this guy, if i get into racing im probably going to race my Xt8-e in the E-truggy class im told is actually gonna start up around here next year.
Which motor/esc should i look at the stock Velineon or maybe the Castle MMP SC/2400kv. Probably only ever going to see 2 or maybe 3s lipo. Any real pros or cons to either?

Body - I have seen a couple guys do the backslash conversion. What buggy body do you use? And what wing mount is used or do you just custom fab something up? Dont know that im going to go that route, just curious.

17mm Hubs - best choice?

Welcome to slash community. just got my slash 4x4 to go with my 2wd. and if you are only going to run 2 or 3s I would stick to 1/10 electronics.. for bashing the VXL is great cause the waterproof.

Where are you putting the STRC parts? The MMP 3800 might be a good choice for a combo.

the 2400 is more for 3s and 4s

trash that STRC motor mount, you might have trouble with debris getting into those holes that are cut away i had that mount and had to fill them in cause every 10 min i would get debris stuck inbetween the pinion/spur when bashing.

Yeah you definitely want to get the Kingheadz motor mount with the larger bearing
As for system combo's i went with the MMP 2400 by caslte all i do is bash i can gear it
Crazy or gear it conservently and never have to worry about heat issues i hardly run it at
Full throttle but knowing i have the power there when i want it IS SWEET
Just think when you where a little kid on a swing and someone was pushing you

It's the addiction to this hobby but mostly its the KiD inside that wants more..

good start! I have the aka adapters and I stripped two nuts already. I also have the traxxas ones and those are pretty nice but I have a hard time taking them off. I like them both but need to not over tighten them.

which nuts did you strip? the small ones that attach the hub to the truck?

One thing youll wanna do is to prevent the bearing on the spur from exploding. You ca do that by milling your motor mount to make the hole larger, and the latheing a rod of brass into a brass ring. Then slip the brass ring around the bearing and put them both into your motor mount. If you have problems with your bearing adapter, buy a aluminum one, or make one.

Kingheadz mount has larger bearing and this has center differential installed... not sure if that's the bearing you are referencing or not.

yes that is the bearing being referred to and if you decide to go 3s you might want to pick up a slipper clutch

Ok so im trying to do the figuring for my ESC/Motor combo. Castle it is going to be but...

Which one will handle better on 2s lipo with maybe the odd 3s run (not likely though as i have to buy enough batteries already and don't need a 3s for anything else)

also, the truck has the center dif installed now but is shipping with the slipper assembly, should i swap that back right away for general bashing?

Cameron the 2s will work but it would be like your running the nimh battery that came with the truck.
the 2400 is awesome on 3s geared right and on 4s its crazy sick just need to watch your temps on the
4s....

Like i mentioned earlier, there isn't anything necessarily wrong with this chassis, the threaded bars up front are where he mounted his AMB and im pretty sure the 2 small holes in front of that are for access to the steering linkage (could be wrong i never asked) but me being me i like to start fresh(er) so im buying a new chassis and its gonna get a RIT bath and i will be going all black on this one as well.

The stock spur with the slipper and/or the center diff... what pitch are those both? Not indicated on the exploded views.
Are the M0.8 or 32p ?

Im still trying to decide of i go with the MMP proSC kit with the 5mm shaft or just use the 3800kv with the 3mm shaft i have here and just buy me a MMP ESC.

It was a good news bad news kinda day. Bad news is both the Oilers and Penguins lost tonight. The good news is, truck showed up today.

Not much doing as of yet, waiting for the new chassis to show up and for that to take a bath before i do much of anything.
So far sitting here for this truck are the AKA 17mm adapters and the KingHeadz motor mount. I also have a Jconcepts Truth body out for paint with the JC overtray.

I may or may not replace the arms, i think the ones on the truck are ok, just a bit dirty and they will get cleaned up at least on tear down when i start transferring parts to the black chassis. Ordered up a couple odds and ends tonight, new center shaft cover and clear gear cover, as these ones are a bit cracked up, although by design it doesn't look like there's much of an option for that (from traxxas anyways, haven't looked much further). And a new drive shaft as well.






Really good news for the night is that the Jconcepts illuzion buggy body i was sent that was packed wrong for my rc8be will fit with a bit of creativity around the towers should i decide to go with a backslash theme

Ok so it turns out i cant read or the LHS website didn't clarify. But i had bought the "Truth" for the 2WD slash so it didn't fit. Only found that out after cutting it out. Sold that for $20 and picked up a Manta shell.

It has got a nice mean look to it IMO. And it isn't too busy with extra stuff on the body. I'm thinking black and white. But will have to see where the paint ends up.

Also received the new chassis and goodies. Once i get around to dying the chassis this rebuild will start coming together.

Still no paint, but the Manta is ready for paint. Got my springs as well. Aren't they purrdy lol.
Been busy on the weekends and havent had a chance to do the new chassis yet thats still to come.

Are they really required for 2s? thats all i intend on running. came with the 3s battery bar but i have a 2s bar waiting to go in the new chassis once i get it dyed.

Have you ran it yet? I think you need to sit back and enjoy it for a bit. It does sometimes get frustrating building something.

haven't even ran it, just thinking about what i have already spent on it since i bought the roller and what i still have to spend... thinking if there is any time to get out of it and not loose a mountain of money on it now is the time. i have it on the local kijiji,see what happens over the next couple days. if nothing i'll be buying the ESC for it and dying the chassis and assembling on the new black chassis and going to town. Worst case, if i still don't like it at least i would have an ARTR to sell haha

When i returned to RC after a few year hiatus my first truck coming back was a Slayer on the 2.5 chassis... it handles like trash and found its way into a revo conversion after about 2 months. Loved the revo platform in comparison.

How does the slash handle in comparison to the Slayer? not as a SC just in general.

That is the beauty of the Slash! You can make it handle any way you want it to. I have one that is looser on the suspension and one that is glued to the road. It's easy to tune it to your liking

MMP SC pro 2400kv on 3s 50c 5000mah. What gearing should i be looking at.

I would recommend the slipper. I would gear it at least 20/50. If you want more speed go up! Mine is geared 22/50 on 4s
