    Titan 12t Break in

Hey guys, my friend just bought his first hobby-grade rc car, The Traxxas Slash. I figured it was brushed so i wanted to break in his motor for him. I have SOME experience with brushed motors but not a lot since I've only owned a Stampede VXL and a Revo 3.3. What is the best break in technique would you guys recommend? I would submerge it into water, but i don't know how long it should stay there until fully broken in. Thanks!

There are so many ways to break it in. I have used water also. Easiest way is to remove the pinion, plug in a batt, turn up the throttle trim till the motor is spinning at about 1/2 speed, let it run for about 10 min, and its ready. Trick is to let it run with little or no load. I would also clean the motor and reoil the bushings after.

Thanks for your reply. If i do the the water break in method, should i use the 7 cell battery or 2 D Size batteries? Do i leave it in there for 10 minutes or more? Also, how many oil drops should i use on the bushing?

The way I do it in water, is get some totally pure (no mineral) water, drop it in, run it as I describe above. It takes about 3-5 min. You will not believe how much crud will come out of that motor into the water. After about 3 min, listen to the rpms, if they stop increasing it is done. Any more and your wearing out your brushes. After you will need some good electric motor cleaner (unplug it!) and really spray the daylights out of it until the liquid comes out clear, let it dry completely, a couple of drops of bushing oil(3n1 works) and its ready.

Or there is the manual method.

Drive on a flat, paved surface with no full-throttle starts and most of the driving being done at high speed.

I am new to the RC world and purchased 2 Slash 2WD's for my twins over the Thanksgiving weekend. I knew nothing of breaking in the brushed motors. I put them on the 50% setting and let them drive 2 batteries through each of them. Would it be worth the $, time and effort to buy motors and break them in this way and then swap them out? I am about to purchase a similar truck for myself to bash around with them.
Thanks in advance for the advice!

ive never read such rubbish in my life. all the replys are totally different.
the titan motor is great, you get a few moaners but your fogetting about the millions traxxas sell. youll always have a few duds. running in ? just go easy for the first two packs. clean if you think you need to. ive had a few and never cleaned or oiled, and they all lasted quite a while. currently running a 12t in my wraith.
Slash VXL, E- Maxx 2 , comin' through!

Na wait till they die, and then worry about break in on the next motors you pick up. By putting it in training mode, you kind of did a break in anyway, though prob not a very effective one.

If you had any idea what you are talking about, you would know that some ways to break in a motor are better than others, and doing it right will make this particular motor much more dependable, and a more powerful and efficient one to boot.

When sct spec racing exploded on to the scene, many people spent a lot of money, time, and resources to squeeze every available watt out of this particular can, and I have seen first hand the difference of a titan12t that was broken in by winging it, and one that was "massaged" with care and diligence. Night and day.

While srt's method may not be the best break in method ever conceived, its probably one of the best you will ever see anyone "give away" to the public (very nice thread by the way, 121).

Just because you ran your titan once a week for 8 months before it died does not mean that proper measures cannot help extend its life, and in turn save money for the kids (and us older kids) that work so hard to afford this luxury.

Ok! I finished breaking in my friend's motor today, and wow! That slash is pretty fast for being brushed, kept up with my stampede. Hes having so much fun with it! I did the water break in for like 15 minutes, cleaned it out/oiled it, then i just put it on training mode for two battery packs. Thanks for all your guy's help!

For the record, Traxxas does not recommend the water break in method. Here is a quote from a Traxxas employee:

Below is the way Traxxas recommends breaking in the Titan:
The Titan 12T motor will benefit from a short break in period to ensure optimum performance and longer motor life. For the first battery pack, use the stock installed pinion gear and drive smoothly on a flat, paved surface. Accelerate smoothly (avoiding full throttle starts), with most of the driving being done at higher speeds. This will help insure that the motor provides the best performance and longest life.

yes it takes the brushes down and "shortens" the life of the brushes but as hard as the brushes are and as aggressive as the brush serrations are. you can get longer life out of the titan if you break it in with water. ive seen motors where the comm has been grooved by the brushes and the serrations are still 70% there. i dont care what traxxas says, that will ruin a motor. the motor as it comes from the factory is its own worst enemy. you show it some tlc and it will give you many hours of run time.

i dont like that traxxas assumes that all racers are willing to go through motors. sure at higher levels of competition this is true but club racers arent made of money. 25 buck motors add up quick.
