    lipo charger...onyx 245??

i was looking at some chargers.
then i found the onyx 245. i read that it can charger multiples batteries at once. also it can do lipos. and nimh and a few others i think. also if i can remember right off the top of my head, that it can do different amps..as well as MAH and that it can balance the batteries.

i was just wondering if anyone uses this and just wondering if you could tell me if it is worth the money. it seems like it.. also seems to be a good first charger.

    thanks if you can help.

Its decent for the money. Keep in mind that while it WILL do 2 batteries at once (and I believe they can be charged at separate amps and can be different voltages, like one 2s and one 3S at the same time)... its only a 50watt charger and only charges at 5 amps max. Its not the most powerful charger but it is convenient in that it will do 2 packs at once.

Budget is everything when your talking chargers. If the 245 is all you can afford and you want a dual charger, go for it. Great brand name and good functionality for the money. BUT... if you can afford a bit higher end charger you might look at something in the Hyperion lineup or something like a Protek 610 Duo and a 20 amp power supply would give you more power.
    Hope that answers your question.

I just bought one for my son to use for his Summit VXL. It comes complete and is pretty flexible in regards to settings. It is simple to adjust the settings. I just bought it so I can't give you any kind of detailed review but I have been able to charge a couple of lipos and the stock NIHMS that came with the Summit and it works as advertised. It will show you how long the battery has been on the charger, how many MAH it has sent to each battery, and how much amperage is going to each side. It will time out at 90 minutes and alert you with an alarm when complete. We may outgrow it later on but this will be our first attempt to give him "his" charger with some supervision. I studied them quite a bit before I bought this one and decided that (as stated by pavmentsurfer) at this price point, it was worth it. We won't likely be charging any large capacity Lipos any time soon. When that day comes, we may add another, larger capacity charger to the family. Hope this helps in some way. Good luck with the your selection.

Pave- thanks. i am on a small budget. if i decide to buy this i will be splitting the cost of the charger with my brother. as i don't want to spend all my money, then have him use it for free.....not gonna happen.

Rick- thank for. you said a few things that i did not read.

    just a quick question....
can it charge at different amps?
    thanks for answering the questions.

Wait... the 245 only has 4 charge rate settings? Hmmm... I thought it was fully adjustable. If thats the case that takes it down a pretty large notch in my mind. Even a Thunder AC6 or 680 has rate adjustments that can be made in .1 increments.

    i wouldn't be charging for than a 3s.
i will probably end up getting this charger. then once i get that and get used to using it i can then get my first set of lipos.

when i do get lipos probably won't be getting more than a 2S.
    another question also..

i run the traxxas VXL system and was wondering something....

.i know it can run up to a 3S lipos. can it handle being run on 3S all the time, like never put in a 2S or a NIMH??
i know it gets hot with my NIMH's and did not want it to get hot with a 3S.
also i will be running a stampede.
    thanks.

ITs all about proper gearing... if you have it geared properly so that it doesnt overheat the motor you can absolutely run 3S all the time. Many do. I prefer 2S... but thats just me.

Check out SPC, SMC, GensAce, and maybe Venom(?). Other wise you can get into $100+ LiPos that just aren't worth the expense. Best of luck.

(better prices can usually be found online vs your LHS)

Yup those are great, I have (4) 2's and (2) 3's, both 5000mah 40c, I have yet to try the 3's packs though The Gens ace packs that is Hard to get as they are always out of stock though. Best bang for your buck. Some other ones you can check out as some have mentioned already is SPC and Pro-Match Racing packs. Both good and priced fairly well.

    Thanks stephan81 for the suggestions.
I think I will just stick to the Gen Ace though.
I will probably have the charger by Christmas. Then the batteries in the spring. I won't be running my pede through winter.
That's why such a long wait for the batteries.

    hey albino rustler
i googled the onyx 235 and it led me to the big squid rc page. i read up on the onyx 235 and it says that it is $$140 but it's being updated and having more features added to it and it don't hit the shelves till February 2012 here's link. to it. http://www.bigsquidrc.com/duratrax-e...ing-onyx-line/

so then i go to google shopping and type in onyx 235 and then it shows that it's 90 bucks.

so should i wait till February for the new one or just go and buy one now?

hey stephan... i will be looking forward for you giving a little "review" of the charger once it gets to your house.

p.s. i know your not suppose to post links but it's not linked to a place where you can by the charger so it might be okay.

Why spend $35 on Gens Ace lipos when 5000mah SPCs are $28.99 and are, IMO, every bit the pack if not more than the Gens Ace? Plus, your supporting a company that supports the forums in a round about way.

    Just my feelings anyway.

ok, I think I have come a conclusion on which charger to get. I will probably get the Onyx 235. As it can do different amp but the increments.
As for the battery..Well I am still looking.

well...i can't find any hard cased 3S lipos from SPC so i think i will just go with the Hard Case Battery Pack; 5000mAh, 25C, 2S, 7.4Volts.

so this is what my new lipo setup will be probably come spring or end of spring.

    Onyx 235 Lipo charger
    then 2 (2S) Hard Case Battery Pack; 5000mAh, 25C, 2S, 7.4V.

one for me & one for the Bro.

once the packs listed above go out and die. might have to look into some 3S for a little bit.

but until then i will just stick with 2S.

thanks to everyone who helped out with me figuring out which charger/battery to go with.

    thanks again...
