    Anybody Have the Motor Overheating

My friend and I bought a lipo 11.1V 5000mah battery recently and have both fried our motors. I'm assuming they overheated and the glue came loose. Has anybody had this problem, and figured out a way to stop this. Besides the obvious taking a break within 10-15 min. Thanks

jfrank - couple tings right off the bat- for 3s and stock ESC /VXL motor, you need to gear down your pinion to a 12 or 11 tooth to help w temps......others will recommend a heat sink or a heat sink /fan combo. If the glue came loose, you can usually call Traxxas and they will have you send it in and fix it (free if you are lucky, but otherwise Ibelieve there is like a $45 fee for a replacement perhaps)...I can tell you that they aare currently out of stock as they have had mine for 2 weeks now.....I have read some guys here will attempt to reglue the motors themselves with some success, you can search for those threads on the search engine on this forum. A couple other ideas are cutting holes in the body to encourage airflow such as the windows an what not, and lastly would be to be mindful of where / how you are driving....thick grass /mud/ thick dirt will cause excessive strain so just something to keep in mind, hope thi helps - they're a blast to bash, sux with down time tho.......good luck!

I have one Ultimate Slash 4x4 and two regular Slash 4x4s and ALL three of them have issues with the VXL motor and VXL esc on 10.8v Nimh (little less volts than 3s Lipo). I firmly beleive that the VXL system is not up to par with running 3s packs.

On all three of my trucks, I run an 11 tooth pinion with the stock 54T spur. I have a huge heat sink and fan on the motor. On the ESC I have the Traxxas fan mounted on top of it.

On 9.6v packs, they run nice at around 150 -160 degress. On the 10.8v packs, they go into thermal within 10-15 minutes. Sometimes the ESC survives a full pack, but then I check the motor and its at around 200 degrees.

I say the VXL system is not up to par with 3s packs. I have THREE trucks and I experience this on all three so its not a freak thing. The VXL system just doesnt cut it and it shouldnt be advertised with such a claim of being capable of running 3s in my honest opinion.

I agree, and once you get a taste of 3s, its hard to just use 2s. So w/ heatsink on motor, and a fan for the esc and motor, plus gearing down, you can get alittle more safe runtime, but will still hit thermals after a while. You can get away w more as we hit cooler fall temps.

You can glue it back together! I have done it many times! Put a hole in the windshield, heatsink with fan on the motor and esc! You should be ok.

CyconXc, you can make your setup even more effective if you unscrew the motor from the motor plate and rotate it counterclockwise (looking at it from the front) so that wires are moved from the top position to the side position. Screw the motor back into the plate and now the wires are out of the way and the heatsink can be centered over the motor and the fan can be adjusted to be center over the heatsink.

EDIT TO ADD: Also, I use thermal compound between my heatsink and motor on my trucks. Its a paste that helps with the transfer of heat to the heatsink.

My motor is definitely hot on 2s lipo, but I don't know if it's dangerously hot. I ordered a couple pinions anyway (11T and 12T) and both heatsink/fans because I'd like to keep using my overtray :P

I run 2s 14t with fan on esc and motor. I use an outerwares shroud to keep debris out with no temp problems. I can run 16t if I keep it on pavement. Infrared thermometer to check temps. Harbor Freight has a couple for under $20.

Had mine, 3s 20c run through a whole battery, even when it was like 110 degrees and motor never stopped...it probably should have tho. It was too hot to touch

Are you guy running in long grass or something? I admit the velineon has some heat issues, but i could run all day 3s 20c 5000mah packs 16/54 ratio and never touch 170degrees. And i ran that set up with the esc fan and a cheapy heatsink on motor. And we hit tri[le digit temps here in july.
