ESC only runs at full speed

I just got a Wild Willy2 that came with the TQ 2.4 HO with Link 2 channel Tx and the 2218 Rx. It has a Dynamite Power Pulse Speed controller and everything works fine (reverse ramps up nice and gradual) except going forward. It starts out at about 75% power and goes up to 80% or so (I have the power reduced to keep the motor happpy). I recently put in a 20T pinion gear and it has a 7.2V 5000mAh NiMH battery. I tried reverting to original factory settings and starting over. Is it the wheelie thing, or can I get a new kinder, gentler ESC?

This sounds like an ESC or a calibration problem, neither of which are supported here due to the 3rd-party ESC.

If it were a Traxxas ESC and had been calibrated correctly with the throttle trim centered, then I would guess that the ESC was faulty.
