Does anyone know if this motor will fit the Slash 4x4 without modifications and if it will work with the stock VXL ESC?

Motor will fit without modifications
Stock ESC will not run it well as it has 4 poles

The 36 series motors are 2-poles. The VXL will run it, just might have heat issues when pushed. If you added an external bec, and a fan, it should do pretty good on 3s.

Pretty sure they are clones of the Leopard 4 poles mate

That's what I was concerned with regarding the 4 pole motors. I couldn't tell on the specs if this Tacon is 4 pole or not...
Edit, I think you're right, crusey. It looks like that motor is 4-pole. thanks for the heads up

It's possible I am wrong, more probable I'm right, but I will admit to the possibilty.![]()
If you look at all the other Tacon motors that are 4-pole they are listed as 1y , 2d, ect. and have the flexible wires coming out of them, as does the Leopard 3674. This looks just like, and is listed just like, all the other 2-pole motors, kv only. Plus look at the wattage difference between the Leopard 4-pole 2400 watts , and the Tacon 1580 watts. But the Leopard 3674 2-pole is listed as 1500 watts. So going by these things, my money is on 2-pole.
Fact is, I don't really know, and have not been able to get a definitive answer.

Yeah, I'd be hard pressed to believe someone from Hobbypartz, knows exactly what's up with everything![]()

But again, I must admit to the possibility that I'm wrong.
There's also the weight. The 4-pole Leopard weighs 315 grams, The 2-pole Leopard is listed as 370 grams , and the Tacon is listed as 370grams. Most Tacon and Leopard motors share the same specs. Other then speculation, I have yet to see anything showing that it's a 4-pole.
The VXL is just as fast as my Castle 2400, when they are geared for the same speed. All I can say for sure it the Tacon 2800kv is just as fast as my Castle 2400kv 4-pole motor![]()
That just isn't the whole story, though.
I have been very happy with Tacon motors, and bought the Tacon 2150 4074 4-pole to test against the Castle 1515 2200 , in my E-revo. Using the same gearing, they were within .5mph of each other, like 48 - 48.5 mph, and the Tacon was not that much warmer after a full bash session with that gearing, like 5-10* . Very impressive, IMO.

Here's a video of a lower kv version (1900kv) of the same Tacon motor in a Stampede 4x4 if you didn't see it already.

OK-so assuming it's a 2-pole, would I see any benefits of running it with the VXL ESC on 2S SPC Lipo? Keep in mind that I'll be converting it to a MT with 4.87" Trenchers soon so I'll be looking for low heat and high torque.
Assuming it's a 4 pole, what then happens to the VXL ESC? Will it just fry?
The motor will run cooler then a VXL motor, for sure. But it will also draw more amps, especially with the Trenchers, on 2s, so I would expect the esc to run hotter.
A 4-pole just doesn't seem to run right with the VXL, but I haven't heard of it frying the esc.

You can't really tell by looking, atleast I can't. The key is the rotor. Does it just have north and south, or is there north and south twice. You could tell with another magnet.

Wow, so we've cracked this thing open and still can't tell?
According to the Traxxas specs, the ESC could barely, just barely, manage that motor. But it runs hot enough with the VXL, so I would say go with a 1/8 ESC if you are going to use that motor.

I recently install a Tacon 1700 3674 motor I had laying around with the VXL-3s esc in my 4x4. I am running the 50t spur with a 26t pinion. The motor runs very cool but the esc went into thermal after about 15-20 mins on a 3s run. This was a little longer run time than running a 11t pinion/54t spur on the stock setup(which on 3s, runs hot!!). Will a small pinion gear only help the motor run cooler or will the esc run cooler too. I am trying to find a cooler solution before I go out and buy a MMP 2400 combo.

Like I stated earlier, running an external BEC, http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXWNS2&P=7 and a fan http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXSGV1&P=ML will allow a little more breathing room for the VXL, I would say 20-30* . Adding an extra cap wouldn't hurt , either.
