    Trouble with the maxx

    Dear traxxas community,

my dad and I have had a t-maxx 3.3 for about a year and a half and over the last 3-6 months we have been having alot of trouble. well first of all our idle is really high and our exhaust is really rich ( i think) even though our hsn, lsn and idle screws are at factory settings. as i said before our idle is very high at stop and we have tried to set it but if we turn 1/2-1 turn down it will quit and we have to start it again. Once we get it start it again we turn it back up to factory and it still seems high.

if you can offer ony help that would be great.

    Thanks, Tye

did you heat the engine up to normal temp and then adjust the needles?

Factory settings are only to get you started and for break in purposes. These mixtures are set so you have a lot of fuel flow for lubrication yet you have high temps as well for breaking the engine in. It probably performs badly as well.
My guess is you haven't tuned for performance yet, or if you did you did not tune the LSN and pnly adjusted the HSN (most common thing I've seen over the years).

    1. Read the owners manual or download a copy from the Traxxas support pages.

    2. Always tune with the engine at operating temps and ALWAYS TUNE WITH 1/2 A TANK!

    3. Have a hand haeld temp guage to get you into the ball park and prevent you from running your engine too lean or too rich, both of which can permanently damage an engine. Normal operating temps will vary from 210-260 depending on fuel, weather, altitude, barometric pressure.

Here's a link that has some other helpful tips and the instructions on tuning the LSN via the pinch test....

i remember starting it and then try to adjust and remember i read that i have to idle it for a few mins and then run it a few mins no more than 1/2 throttle to get temps up to normal and then adjust the HSN-LSN-Idle.

Did you make sure to install the new piston in the correct direction?

The knowledge of being a registered mechanic does not necessarily transfer to nitro engines… I would ask him if he was sure the piston was installed with the cutout portion of the skirt facing the front/carb side of the engine. You are describing all the classic signs of a backwards piston.

Amen to that, I've worked on Motorcycles now for well over 20 years and I've put in the piston backwards on my Tmaxx..

it still can run but you would have trouble like your having check it out just to make sure to rule out everything, it beats going out and buying something when you dont have too.
