whats weird about it, is normally, you would suspect that the customer ran it out of oil on purpose, but this guy was traveling, and is from out of state(Alabama), so who blows up their engine on purpose that far from home?

Shoot, I've never seen an aircraft TURBINE engine go like that. And I've been overhauling them for 13 years!

Look at the conrods near the crank side.... They are black!

That guy drove that truck all the way back from alabama with his radio full blast so he couldn't hear all the parts slapping around in that motor.

I don't care who made that engine, they just don't go poof like that. Not without some help..... Even if something was not assembled correctly....

Tell me the pistons jumped off the wrist pins by themselves while in the block without some serious issues before the failure... No, Way.....

YEP, but we will never know, when we pulled the heads, bolt torque felt awful loose, got the feeling not the best tech in the world did the repairs down there........so who knows what else was left loose, debris, dirt, oil amount in engine etc,etc..........

Oh guys, im sorry, I did mention the fact that the customer was traveling, but, he HAD pulled into another dealership, in a town near us with bad rattling from his engine, and they didnt have time to help,(so he said), so in fact alot of that damage WAS done driving from there to us, sorry for the confusion, didnt mean to incite flame..............I just thought the carnage was cool!

I can say that in these newer GM trucks they do not use very good oil pumps in them.

Short story from experience on my 98 Chevy 1500. I bought the truck with around 70k miles on it. On cold start up the oil pressure would read at around 60 psi. After the truck would reach operating temp, sitting at a red light the oil pressure would drop between 20 and 40psi Waaay too low. We thought ok maybe the oil pump is getting weak so my father called his good friend that worked at the local Chevy dealer to ask him about it. He said it was normal and that he was driving a brand new company truck that read the exact same oil pressures mine did. Later on down the road we filled up with some junk gas that resulted in a bent valve and this was around 100k miles on the truck. (It was junk gas because it wasn't a month after this happened they tested the gas quality in our area and found a bunch of bad gas). So we opted just to go ahead and go through the whole motor. When we did we found something quite interesting with the crank journal bearings. The front 3 crank bearings were wore down to the brass. Why were they wore down to the brass? Too low of oil pressure from the factory oil pump. We replaced the stock oil pump with a Melling High volume pump. Now my oil pressure reads 80psi on a cold start up and no less than 60psi idling at a red light, right where it should be.

Now I'm not saying this is what happened to the guy's truck the OP showed pics of, I'm just saying that the oil pumps in these trucks are one thing for sure that is not up to par. IMO the picture of the destruction looks like either a motor that has just been absolutely beaten to death, or has had some shoddy work done to it.

60 PSI seems awfully high for idling once warmed up. What does it shoot up to when you apply the throttle?

On a really hot summer day 70 to 75, in the winter 80. My father is a Guru when it comes to Chevy engines. He said that's where it should be so I can't argue with over 40 years experience .

That's great, but I could almost bet the crank bearings probably look like mine did.

Yep the 5.7 Vortec is pretty much the same 350 chevy small block only with the SFI fuel injection system and all the fun sensors. Also they have a plastic intake plenum, plastic distributor housing, and a cool non re usable plastic timing cover with a crank sensor in it.

I got a 94 chevy heavy half with the 350 tbi and it doesnt have a problem with oil pressure, I think you may have just had a bad pump. My dad still runs his 90 cheyenne with a 305. It runs great despite having 680,000+ kms on the odo. My truck starts every time without hesitation and I've got 312,000+ on mine. The fun thing is that my engine has no plastic parts on it. Just the distributer cap. No plastic intake etc.

So I imagine GM would have upgraded the oil system since the 88-98 model year as they have gone through 2 body styles since and are on thier 3rd. also in 98 the trucks were completely rebuilt and almost nothing is interchangable between the two.
OP, what was the model year, engine size, body configuration and tonnage of the granaded truck? Just curious.

That really depends on what you are calling vortec. For example, my dads truck (2001 Silverado) has the Vortec(the one that literally says Vortec on it) v8 engine, but it is NOT the same as the earlier engines at all. The motors with the spider injection/tbi were not LS-based engines. Those motors had the Vortec heads on them, but still the same basic block they had been using since the 70's or so. Vortec heads will fit on most older style small blocks. They will NOT fit on the LS stuff, nor vice versa.

4.3? 4.8? 5.3? 6.0? 6.2? 8.1? (do they still make that?) 6.6 DM? Half ton, three quarter, one ton? Swb? Lwb? Reg, ex, crew?
I missed the year of truck in title, I just assumed thats when it happened.
