Hi, new to Traxxas! Need info on going brushless plz....

Hi all and thanks for havin me! I bought my myself, er, um, my kids a couple slash 2wd's for xmas. I want to upgrade one of them to brushless and need some opinions. I will stick to the 7 nor 8 cell packs so that they are interchangeable. I am looking for a little more power/speed and alot less maintenance!! i dont need to go 70 mph, but i do want to do the occasional wheelie and throw some nice roosters!!!!

I have searched here and see that castle vs velineon is quite the debate! I have been to the castle website and have no clue what model there would be appropriate to compare to the traxxas V.

So, I guess im looking for a more specific model to compare against the velineon and what the pros and cons would be for my application??

    Thanks in advance!

I say keep it simple and go with the Traxxas VXL upgrade. It give plenty of power and speed on 7cell NiHm batts and is very user friendly plus is still has the training mode for when you...err the kids want to play with your...err their truck..LOL

If you are new to RC, I would suggest keeping it simple and picking up the Traxxas Velineon system. The Castle sytems have a alot more adjustability, but you would probably never use any of those settings bashing with your kids.

The training mode of the Velineon is nice when you want to slow the truck down for inexperienced drivers, but it can also handle up to 3s Lipo when you want to go really fast.

Yes the VXl system is waterproof. Castle lacks this feature.

Castle = more customization/tweaking VXl= simplicity is bliss.

3500 motor vxl3s esc. traxxas has a hop up program, where you trade your stock traxxas motor and esc in for the brushless system for 130.00 but you can find same deal on ebay and keep your old stuff.

Castle Creations Sidewinder SCT is what I chose and I am very happy with it. 3800kv 4 pole motor has lots of torque, just as much top end and I even notice longer battery life.

With a velineon system and an 8 cell you can easiky reach nearly 50 mph. Most traxxas brushless systems run the 3500 kv motor. Its very tough, powerful, and waterproof. Its also very easy to use. Training mode is also a nice feature. Unless your serious in racing the mod class, id ztick with the velineon system. Castle creations is nice...but very high tech.

I have the Velineon motor/esc combo and love it,water proof is a sweet bonus,I drive in everything, through snow, mud, rain, ravines then wash in shower and blow dry with no issues.
Mine is powerful,no wheelies or anything yet got big tires and a fully tightened slipper clutch so wheels break loose whenever I give full throttle, just over 50kmh at about 40 tires start to ballon, waiting for heat to get street tires.

I say you would probably want to just get the Velineon... a lot easier to maintain, set-up, and learn to use than the castle and most other brushless systems.
Yes, I drive an electric converted Nitro Hawk.

I have vxl in my slash with the 2.8 talons to give me some extra ground clearance, the gearing I usually run is 23/86 on 2s lipo which gives me 40 mph so a 7 cell will give you about the same. Now, when you wanna go fast, my 3s in my truck with that setup is geared for 59 mph. My friend has the sct system in his stampede and its a beast of a system but I still love my VXL!

Yes if you use the stock body but I use a proline desert rat carnage body that dosen't have the fenders so that I can run mt tires and the air flows better

My rustler gets front light at 46 mph...if it hits a sligt buml..in the air t goes...like a top fuel dragster in a windstorm....sliding on its lid....it was funny....the first time...after that i got frustrated..lol my slash is still stock xl5. If yu wanna keep air outa the body, try drilling holes in the back of the cab of the body...i did. One on each side..it helped my truck jump better because it wasnt catching air inside the body..it was able to vent out.

If you set the truck up right, it shoukd stay pretty well grounded...

The castle combo can be had for $90 shipped, brand new. It is not waterproof, but can take wet conditions. Just dont submerge it. I have run my sidewinder and mmp in heavy rains without ever having a moisture related problem.

It's a great system, my friend has the sidewinder sct system in his pede(yzinger02) and it's really powerful on 2s and insane on 3s but the biggest selling points is the $90 sale price brand new and it's really the only 4 pole motor made for a 1/10 2wd or 4wd

Proline chassis plate. They developed it to reinforce the weak spot in front of the rear shock tower.
