Gear pitch is basically how many teeth are on the gear and how big they are. Smaller gear pitch means less teeth on the the gear but they are bigger stronger teeth. Easiest way to figure it out is lookup a Traxxas Jato spur and a Traxxas Slash spur, you will see the difference. All the change from 48p gears to 32p gears does is give you stronger gears and gears that are smaller in diameter and are less out of round then Traxxas' 48p gears which can be so out of round as to be impossible to mesh properly.

It will increase durability, not performance.

Increase durability and make it easier to mesh gears. Technically higher pitch gears are more efficient and perform better. However the "loss" in performance going from 48p to 32p gears is so minimal you won't notice and would be almost impossible to measure. If you're using Traxxas' gears you're way better off doing 32p as they are less messed up.

well, if you divide 18 by 86, you get .209
if you do the same with a 32P ratio, and get somewhere around .209, it will be close to the same ratio. you can't get one that is EXACTLY the same.
I run 12/56 32P gearing, that comes out to .214, it is close, but it is a slightly higher ratio.
the closer to 1 the number gets, the less torque and more speed you will have.

    anywhere that sells Traxxas parts.
The spur gears are from the Jato, and the pinion gears are usually from the Emaxx.

You can pick from 54 56 and 58t Jato spurs, then as the above poster said Emaxx pinions. Note you need to put the Emaxx pinions on backwards to get them to mesh. If you're running the Vxl 14/56 is a great gearing, super fast, can still pop serious wheelies and my motor only ever got up to 120 degrees, esc would hit 110. An above poster suggested 12/56 which is a good gearing for stock but is way too low for the Vxl or any motor with a similar kv ratng, the motor will actually run hotter geared down that far.

You need a 32p or Mod 0.8 Pinion and spur gear. That's it

Someone told me to switch to 32p gears I would have to change the slipper clutch? Is this correct? Or is is it a simple replacement of the spur gear (replace with jato) and pinion gear?

the spur gear is a straight fit, not modification necessary.

and romian, what exactly are you not understanding?

romain, here are the links for the 2 gears you need to achieve the 14/56 ratio suggested above.
    http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXXF60&P=7
    http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXKLZ8&P=7

    Now to change the gears:
remove the gear covers 2 screws and pull it off
loosen the 2 motor mount screws and slide the motor back in the mount.
loosen the grub screw in the pinion on the motor and the pinion will slide off of the motor shaft.
take out the 3 screws on the spur gear (not the center slipper nut). you may have to wiggle the spur to get it off the slipper.
push the 32p spur onto the slipper and put the screws in but do not tighten all the way down.
when all 3 screws are snugged up to the spur, then you can tighten them all evenly (a little at a time) to avoid a wobbly spur.
put the 32p pinion on the motor (reversed so that the gears line up) and tighten the grub screw.
slide the motor so the gears "mesh".
Before you tighten the 2 motor mount screws all the way, check that there is a little play in the gears by holding the pinion and gently "rocking" the spur back and forth. there should be very little play between the teeth. this is a very important step, because if you set the gears too far apart, the gears will wear very fast or strip, and if too tight, you could burn up your esc/motor.
finish tightening the 2 motor mount screws securely. check your mesh 1 more time.
dont put the gear cover back on, it wont fit, and you wont need it.

my input would be wait for a bit on this--- learn some of the other basics of the hobby first--- I've been running on the same stock gearing since I started....once those wear out I will switch over to 32 p- but not until then...

Agreed. The stock 48 pitch is perfectly adequate if maintained properly.

I picked up the 32p parts from my LHS today and will install them tonight. I'll let ya'll know how it turns out. The LHS owner says it's louder than the stock spur.

Well the 32p works quite well and it is louder than the stock 48p but not too bad. I see how the spur gear cover no longer fits... I thought the new spur gear would be wider and therefore the cover wouldn't fit, but it is taller due to the new slipper thickness and how the spur gear is designed. Whoever thought of this was one smart guy.
