Backfiring?

Just wondering what causes the engine to backfire.Today when I tried to start my sport if backfired and blew the exhaust tube right off the header.I put it back together and tried again then it backfired out the muffler.Still haven't figured out why it won't start yet checked for air leaks and tried a new plug.I was really wondering what makes it backfire.

If you have the engine to rich then unburnt fuel could get into the exhaust and combust. Try leaning it out a bit.
