I bought the Villain a couple weeks ago for myself and my son (our birthdays are 1 day apart). We had it for 2 days before I sent it back; it is leaking terribly, and this was the RTR version. But besides that, I am thrilled with the speed and handling out of the box. I'm considering the following modifications.
1) I've ordered the 30-turn motors. I know this seems counter to what most of you have been talking about on these boards, as it will slow the boat down considerably. However my son is just 9 and right now he needs a little bit slower boat to get used to the controls, and I wouldn't mind the trade off for longer run time. QUESTION: How much slower should I expect and how much longer run time on my 1700 mAh and 3000 mAh?
2) I've got to get the Octura props. For me, the boat is too fast for our pool, but could be faster on the open water. Seems like that is the easiest upgrade for speed. QUESTION: Why do you pay good money for props that aren't finished? I've read about people sanding and polishing and balancing and sharpening... I thought that paying $15-$20 for a tiny prop, it would be ready to go! Without risk to my health!
3) I'm thinking about 17-turn motors. I want to get as much speed as possible without messing with the electronics and without killing the run time. It seems as though this is as extreme as one can get without changing other components such as the ESC. QUESTION: How much will it cost for a good pair of 17-turn motors appropriate for the Villain (with the reversability and all).
4) Got to have the cooling kit. As suggested by many on this board, I'll probably drill holes through the ESC's fins to keep it cool. In addition the the 17-turn motors, I've got a couple 3000 mAh batteries, so cooling appears to be a must. QUESTION: Is the cooling necessary for the standard Stinger motors with a couple of 3000 mAh batteries?
Thanks to all of you for this board. It has been quite a quick and informative education in RC Boating!
