you could take everything out of the enigne then spray it down or just spray it down with motor cleaner or brake cleaner as it is.

Use a small, stiff old paint brush...or you can use a can of air or air compressor, that really works well...

The best way to clean it thoroughly is to take it completely apart. That includes taking the crankshaft, piston, connecting rod, and bearings out. Then you can soak it in engine degreaser. This gets it looking like brand new. It might take a lit scrubbing too of course.

This may be a little low tech, but what I do is pull the engine out, put some after run in the carb and rotate the flywheel a few times, put a cap on the carb and pipe outlet and a piece of spare fuel tubing(about 9") on the boost bottle nipple and run the other end to the carb inlet.. I add a smaller piece to the pipe pressure fitting. If you don;t have a boost bottle, use two pieces.. I don;t think it's wise to put fuel line from the pipe to the carb.. I doubt you would bump the flywheel enough to send stuff over to the carb, but I still wouldn;t do it. Anyway. I have a small spray bottle I got from CVS(they sell them in the make-up isle) Into this I pour a couple caps of concentrated simple-green, then top off with hot water.. give it a little shake.. I then spray the entire engine down well and brush it with an old toothbrush.. Repeat as necessary.. I then rinse it with another spray bottle full of water... towel dry a bit, pull the carb cap and fuel lines, and do the after-run thing again, then air dry completely, then one more after-run treatment.. this gets it all off, even the tough stuff.. the more often you do it, the quicker and eaier it is.

Some will say not to use water, but If the carb and pull start(or back plate are on tight and you cap the carb and pipe outlet and put a long piece of fuel tubing on the carb and boost nipple, you won't get watter in the engine by just spraying it..

I close my engine by putting a cort in the exhast outlet, a piece of fuel tubing with a screw in the fuel nipple and then you can get a cap to put over the carb from tower or at you local hardware store. after that, it's water-tight.
