Im gona port a TRX. any quick suggs?

I really dont want to do any carving on the back of the sleeve only the case will i still see good improvements in lo end torque ? this is for my friends Rustler! any one w/ any good info?

Opening up those ports is the single most satisfying modification you can do to the engine; the sleeve, crank, and rod treatments do help and increase power a little bit. If you do not want to do all of the treatments, just opening the ports will make a night and day difference. Take your time and work carefully, have a clean work area, plenty of light, and remember there is no such thing as too clean an engine when it comes to re-building.
Keep in mind that porting works best with a good exhaust system. Good luck!

The piston is made of a high-silicon alum., to cut this alloy effectively you need a very high speed grinder; much faster than most Dremels. Also, you REALLY need to know what you are doing! Only the crown can be modified, and only in certain areas. One little nick on the skirt, or too deep of a cut, and the piston is ruined. I know of only one person locally who has enough experience to work on pistons, and even he only works on larger (> .35) engines. Just stick to the case ports, that will make give you the biggest gain with the least risk.

Well i got the ports opened up w/ no screwups , i used the small cutting ball and a small stone to smooth them out. i used a 300watt halogen hanging from the porch (plenty of light is good)
i nailed the case down upright onto an old speaker box that really worked good! cant wait to run it! If you cut on the crank , rod or piston you will through off the balance right. i dont think that would be good for bearings.

In most cases you do not remove enough material from the crank to throw it out of balance, the big worry is ruining the timing and scoring/scratching the finish. As for the piston and con rod; the piston is a reciprocating part so balance is not really an issue, and if you knife-edge your rod properly (remove equal amounts of material from both sides) then you should have know problems.
Sounds like you did a pretty good job, I love the idea of nailing the engine on a speaker box: very inventive. Make sure you clean it really well, any little bits of lint or metal filings will make sort work of your engine. Let us know how it runs when you get it all back together.

Well, I just got done porting my TRX Pro .15. I didn't do a very aggressive port job. But what a difference it made. I have a Dynamite pipe and an 18 tooth clutch bell. Mine will not quite pull wheelies, but it is darn close!! It comes out of the corners on three wheels every time now. I'm still playing with the carb settings, I ended up having to richen mine up to get it run fairly well. Also, some people have posted here that their ported max run a lot cooler afterwards, I don't see much of a difference in head temps..still around 290 after a hard run...

Thats good news Bubz, did u see the wheele post where someone said thier Maxx was wheeles all day w/ a ported Trx and a Big tube header and a AE pipe! i might need a big tube soon!

Yeah, that post inspired me to port my engine! I was hoping that it would pull wheelies all day long...but oh well. It is definitely a HUGE difference. I'll probably buy another engine and try a massive port job on that one.
