Running all rear wheels (or similar offset)..the right way!

If you've been running similar offset wheels such as 4x4's or Blitz's, or perhaps need to be able to rotate those expensive race tires to even out the wear to get consistant handling, you're most likely running all rear on your 2wd. However the downside would be the front track width would be around 4mm narrower (2mm on both side). While this would serve for a quicker steering on tight tracks, on large sweeping high speed track, the narrower front would make the truck slightly tipsy. Some of you may have done or thought of this mod..but here it is again

To be able to run similar offset wheels while still retaining the same front track width of a stock 2wd, here's very simple how-to (note this only applies to Slash 2wd with stock suspension, not Protrac)

The backspacing difference between the front and rear wheels measured on the hub is 2mm.

I simply find 11x5x1mm shims. Even though the hub is 12mm, they're hexes, not circle so 12mm shims wont fit, you need around 11mm diameter shims or purchase Tamiya wheelspacer which comes in 0.5 and 1 mm thickness and a direct drop-in in the 12mm hex. You'll need 2mm of thickness each side.







It's worth noting due to the thickness of the spacer, the hex seating will be shallower, only 2mm (4mm originally). Although the front of the 2wd is lighter and not subjected to torque twist, I strongly advise alum hexes for a more rigid fit. Some have questioned the decreased strength of the shallower hex seating though, but I haven't found a single issue so far during my track running. A dab of Loc Tite on the wheel nuts is advisable though.



As you can see, the front now retains the original track width, the front tires are almost parallel with the fender..and you get that wide stance as if you're running the front wheels. If you have Slash 4x4, Blitz, Ultima in your SC arsenal or anything running standard offset SC wheels (Slash 2wd rear) you can swap tires/wheels now!

The other good thing about this is, if you need to narrow down the front track for quicker steering, you can simply run 1mm or no shims. If you're after an even wider front, you can use the Slash front wheels with the shims.

Yep, the difference is very slight, you couldn't tell the difference with a naked eye..but it's there. Some have run all rear without the need for this mod, but I certainly felt the difference running the 4mm overall narrower width to running stock front width. Less oversteer.

I found some washers for 5mm bolts in our bolt bin at work today that will work just like his. I'm sure any good home improvement store would carry them.

I'm thinking of going to Ace hardware tomorrow to see if they have some plastic washers to use that fit these dimensions.

I got the shims at regular hardware store. However most 5mm shims have a standard outter diameter of 12mm, you need to find around 11mm in diameter, otherwise it won't fit inside the hex. You could sand the side a little to shave the 1mm off the overall diameter.
