Gearing suggestions for Venom Fireball 17t brushed motor

I came across a Venom Fireball 17d motor and would like some suggestions for gearing this motor in a stock Slash. I was planning to start with 18/86 to be safe.

I also have a Reedy MVP 24deg stock motor (27t) that I can use too. What gearing do you recommend for this motor.

Which motor would be more reliable, highest torque, highest speed?

Researching more I determined that I should start with a 15t pinion or I could fry the motor. I see a trip to the LHS on my horizon!!!

Oh man, I had a 15d in my pede... geared 15/90 and it melted the motor wires right off the endbell. Like, melted the solder it got so hot in one run on a 7cell. Gear as low as possible. The fireball motors have a reputation for living up to their names. Just watch temps closely.

I don't want to be the bearer of bad news but Fireball motors have a very bad reputation. I myself have had 2 of them fail. One had 10 mins on it and the other about 15 mins.

I would gear those lower than a typical 15T and start down at 14/90 and watch the motor temps.

What is the lowest gearing that fits in the Rustler/Stampede/Slash gear box? I have a 86t and 90t spur. I will need to get smaller pinions since my smallest is a 16t I think.

I would prefer to use the 86t since I am using the RPM gear cover and the 90t doesn't fit.

I have read about the reputation of the fireball motors from Venom. My situation is that this motor was given to me for my Slash which is a spare/kids model for fun. I don't want to spend too much money. I may consider the Reedy MVP Stock 27t motor as a replacement backup if the Fireball fries. Otherwise I will just get a new Titan 12T until I can get a new Havoc Spec ESC to install my brushless system. A $3 pinion is better than a $49 Reman. ESC from Novac.

I am really glad to hear that!!! I never tried to use the 90t with the RPM cover.

So I should use my 90t and get a 14t pinion.

I too have run the RPM cover with a 90t spur. No issues at all.
I think another good choice for a cheap motor if your Fireball does... well... go up in smoke would be the Electrifly S600. It will perform close to a titan but wont die... Ive got one I havent used yet. I bought it just to have around in case I ever needed it. Cost me $16 from tower which I thought was cheap enough to just keep around as a spare.

Just for future reference you can gear the Slash all the way down to 12/90. Never tried 12/86 so i'm not 100% sure but I think it will fit.

OK so I had my Dad run my Slash with the subject motor. On asphalt it ran as hot as 151 DegF. On a dirt track it was lower and after the second battery pack it quit. It looks like the commutator delaminated from the rotor. Is this common? I plan to remove the end bell tonight to check out the failure.

Yes it is very common with these motor. As I said before I had 2 of them dies with less than 25 mins of run time combines.

When you replace it go with a Checkpoint or SpeedGems and stick with a 17T. Anything lower gets hard to gear correctly. The temps at 151F show that the gearing was right so that wasn't the cause of the failure
