Just curious to see who everyone uses for internet and what your upload and download speeds are.

I can break a whopping 300KB/s download speed on a good day to a good server if all the planets line up and a rainbow appears over my modem.
40KB/s up and 250KB/s down is typical for me with this DSL. It's advertised as 3 megabits (385KB/s) but never see that kind of speed. At least it's stable and has no port restrictions or blockages.

I have a Mediacom tech coming over tomorrow because my service keeps cutting out about every 2-4 minutes. They have been installing new equipment and my service has been severely hampered. I'm not even recieving great speeds right now. I'm looking forward to recieving my discount on the next bill. In the mean tim are you recieving what you pay for?

Looks like I started an epidemic with posting the speed test results LOL.
This is great. So many have pretty impressive speeds too.Originally Posted by CarGuy7a

No doubt man. Some of these impressive speeds almost make me wonder why my numbers are so low running on the same type of service IE 20 meg.Originally Posted by Dknuckles
Ok explain why my 20 meg service is so freakin slow according to the numbers I posted above in post #3Originally Posted by slowenuff

Many reasons as to why internet can be slow. Pc problems, web browser, home network problems, modem/gateway problems, cabling issues in and around the home, signal issues within the neighborhood or town you live in. When you are on a network your bandwidth is divided sometimes equally sometimes not. Also depends on how many devices are actively using your network like other pcs, smartphones, and gaming consoles. And lastly the server you are using for speed testing could be overwhelmed or just plain suck. What brand and model of modem do you have?
I think it could be the crappy router we have. All the stuff came from Insight and they did run new cable lines when they installed it. I have no idea what modem it is but the router is a Belkin.Originally Posted by slowenuff

Depends on the franchise agreement the city did with Time Warner. They could be getting the services comped and the Time Warner customers of NC could be subsidizing it.
It is actually a independent private school, and last year I was told by the IT help desk that they had 3 fiber lines coming into the school. It is a K-12th school with 5th-12th graders using laptops in every class of the day and some of the younger students using computers for special projects. They see alot of internet traffic everyday, so i guest they need it. With their upload speed, I always upload my YouTube video at school LOL.Originally Posted by slowenuff

Private school.... that explains it. The cost to run fiber directly from Time Warners Headend to the school.......wow!

The ip address for most cable modems is 192.168.100.1 enter the address in your web browsers address bar. From there you should be able to see the what signal levels are. First will be your downstream levels. You want those to be between 10 and -10. And next your upstream levels you want them to be between 32 and 51.
In common terms, what does ping mean?Originally Posted by slowenuff

why dont evryone explain to me what this stuff is and meens
The ping in the speedtest is a basic measurement of how long it takes your pc to send and receive a request and response from the speedtest server. High ping (200 ms or higher) can be an early indicator of a problem with your service. You can do your own ping tests as well. With pcs open your command prompt type "ping" then a space followed by whatever website you want like "google.com" then press enter. Your pc will then automatically do a test. You can do a longer test by putting a space followed by "-t" after you enter the website. You can end the test by pressing and holding the Ctrl and C buttons together. Almost forgot make sure you turn off any software firewalls or peerblocking programs or the test may not work.
