How much motor can you run on a given ESC?

is there a specific specification to look at when matching up a motor & ESC combo? will any motor work on any ESC?

Can you run a 5700kv on the stock ESC?

Can you run a 7000kv motor on a Sidewinder?

Specifically I'm looking at the Castle 4600kv or 5700kv motors to run off my Sidewinder ESC Defiantly on 3s power, but I'd like to try 4s power

I was just reading the specs on the tower hobbies web site, for the Sidewider/4600 & Sidewinder/5700 combos they say 2s is the max for the 5700 and 3s for the 4600.

whats the advantage in running the 5700? I guess if you are limited to running 2s if you are racing. the 4600 on 3s seems like the best choice for bashing, slightly more RPM out of the same volts (my 3s on the stock VXL) and much cooler temps.

It's really not the Kv that matters for the ESC it's the max amperage draw of the motor being used.

The stock ESC can handle about 50a max.

yes and the stock bullet connectors can only handle about 50a max.. the sidewinders 4mm connectors only handle 75a max.. the stock motor can draw more than 50 so there is a benefit gained already if esc is changed. No castle motor will run correctly with the stock esc.

Castle 4600 will happily run 4s with a sidewinder / mamba esc, they can burst to 100 amps

Sorry I sold it already, I have or had 3 of these, 2 mamba max, 2 mamba max pros and 2 stock traxxas ones and I am only using the mamba max pros, the 1 sidewinder was used for maybe a total of 10 mins the other were backups brand new, one of the maxes were used maybe a total of 20 mins the other was a back up and one of the pros resides on my overpowered 4s beast the other in the box never used.

I may sell one of the other sidewinder and the last mamba max if the pending deal doesnt go through!!!

I just ordered the Tenbol mount, and just before clicking BUY on the Castle CM36 4700KV I was thinking, "What If I don't want to go 4s right away" It seems to me comparing the Stock VXL to the 4600kv and the 5700kv all on 3s the 5700kv would be a better all round improvement over the VXL and 4600kv

#1 I'm after running cooler but i figure I might as well get some performance out of my upgrades.

Or should I just do the 4600kv big block and plan on going 4s later on.

I probably won't buy any batterys until my current 3s pack goes bad, so I think I should just go for the best bang for the buck improvement.

I am also thinking that with the 5700kv motor and 2x 2s packs in parallel I'd be able to have nearly the performance of the stock VXL motor on 3s but with nearly a hour of run time and zero heat issues.

Your thoughts make pretty good sence to me. The 5600 on 2S lipo would be 42% increase in speed over the stock motor on 2S lipo.

When you put the 5600 on a 3S Lipo, you will be turning in a calculated 62,000 rpm range, which will deliver you some pretty exiciting performance when geared correctly.

If 4S is out in your future, the 5600 would be a good bet. You can always have a stock motor ready to go (new ones are available on e bay for about $35) when you want to tone things down a lot.

The only thing is if you had the 4600, and 2S lipos it is such an easy job to change from parallel to series, and a quick gear change and have a fire breathing monster.

Anyway, I think the 5600 on 2S, and 3S Lipos can be a very good deal. Finally, the way I calculate things, the 5600 on 2S would only turn 5% slower than the stock motor on 3S..........
