Engine problems, Rust and green goo

Well I was ripping my Slash yesterday in light rain. No problems as I thought.
But it started to slow down greatly and i noticed a visible spark when the motor ran. Then the engine just shut down but the steering servo was still working fine. When i took it inside to inspect, most of the metal chassis parts had already begun to rust. Also with further inspection, when i disconnected the battery pack i noticed a green substance on the connection terminals. What have I gotten myself into? Will i need a motor replacement or can this be fixed by myself without travelling to the LHS

welcome to the mysterious world of Titan. Basically your motor is dead. you need a replacement. if you bought the Slash recently (or whatever) make sure you contact Traxxas support, let them decide for you. I believe it's very important that first THEY realize this is a very common problem.

Alright I guess ill call when I get home. On the upside I could always upgrade to VXL while I'm at it. Thats a bummer thought, I've only had for about a month or so and it should last me 6 months at least from what i've heard on these forums

yeah, if you only had it for about a month...
my Titan ALWAYS had a visible spark from the brushes when traveling at full speed...
but only a month? and only light rain? I jumped my Slash into pools, and through the snow, and through mud for 7 months before my titan quit!
and I don't know what to say about this said "green goo"... the only thing that I can think of is corroded copper... but the battery terminals are supposedly gold plated...?

When I tried to clean off the green substance, it wiped away the gold plating and I could see the copper underneath. I tried calling 1-888-TRAXXAS but every time I get a busy signal, is there any known e-mail address they can respond me to? I need to call before the 30 day period is up

ah... so the gold plating had worn away?
if there was green "goo", then that was the corroded copper getting wet.
The only thing is that copper would not corrode like that over the period of one bash session, it would need a bit longer to gain that green coating...

I do not know of any email address, but it is probably on this site somewhere.

email support can take days for them to answer though so you might want to keep calling.

i actually used to contact them all the time and usually got one within 1 or two days, although i only did email because i didnt really prefer calling, but i do now. yet again i was emailing ususally when the vxl systems first came out, so not as many people had traxxas trucks.
if you want me to i can break your truck for free!

Thats true, the weekend is coming up. But if they dont contact me within the 30 day mark atleast they known i contacted them before it was over and i hate waiting on hold for 3 hours for sombody to talk to and i already know the problem probably wont be fixable over the phone. still pondering about my car. Its been a rainy day today and would've been perfect for sliding on pavement...... has anyone came across a problem like mine and they were able to exchange it for a different model?

I doubt you would be able to exchange your whole truck.
I don't think I have ever seen a company that manufactures ANYTHING that would let you do that
You can ask, but if you fix your problems, and everything is good, you will be back to having fun in no time

Lol yea I have bashed it pretty hard but nothing any other slash owner hasn't done. Got a response but it's pretty much a copy/paste of what it says in traxxas support. Guess I'll disconnect the leads and test it on the battery then I will return here with my findings. And whatever about exchange, love my slash can't truely part with her yet lol

I wonder how much water you have been running in and have you ever cleaned and re-oiled the motor. My titan only lasted about a month or two and I cleaned and re-oiled the bushings every week. But I knew I wanted to go brushless so I really did not care to much.

The Titan is not that good of a motor to begin with but you should at least try and maintain it somewhat to get it to last a little longer. At least they are inexpensive to replace and easy to get.

actually no I haven't cleaned it yet. Im really unsure on how to clean it, do i just shoot up the inside of the engine with something like WD-40? And I haven't been driving it in a pool at all lol. Just medium rain about twice, and light rain that day. Rest of the time it was kicking up grass and gravel

What I know for sure is WD-40 is a guaranteed commutator/stator killer for your motor. Please make sure you assist Traxxas or someone that knows for sure which material to use for such a cleaning.

I usually clean with DRY degreaser, and rinse with flowing water while the motor is turning at low speed.

awesome, this is why i didnt try and clean it. I found something called Moovit, its High Performance Penetrating Lubricant. or should i look for a degreaser as you use

You need an electric motor cleaner like http://www.duratrax.com/caraccys/dtxc2458.html or similar and then oil the end bushings with a light oil.

Alright, Thanks. Ill pick some up next time im at my LHS. If Traxxas does send me a motor replacement, awesome. Then i can have a spare Titan if i can clean it and maybe ill drop it in my Rustler chassis or even my Evader that isnt fast enough. After driving a slash, every other RC can't compare.
