Project: Honey, I Shrunk The E-Maxx

Hello Guys,

Well, this past weekend I had an idea... I want to create a small E-Maxx... How small you may ask??? Well, not a 1/16th scale, but something just a little smaller than a Stampede (10 inches wheelbase)... Why you may ask??? Why not, it's fun!!!

So, what I have in mind so far is the following:

* Shortert a-arms from the 1.5 T-Maxx.
* Velineon powered.
* Custom aluminum chassis.

Still thinking about:

* Rims and tires
* Body

I'll post a picture of my chassis design tonight... And, any comments will be appreciated!!!

Hahaha, maybe in a near future I'll make a 1/5 scale maxx...

This one is going to be 4WD, it's going to be almost identical to it's big brother...

This is how the upper chassis looks so far... It also has two lower chassis for the batteries at each side...



It's only 21cm long and 16cm wide (8.25 x 6.25 inches)... I still don't know if I'm going to use one or two servos...

Man, you cannot get enough projects! All of your builds turn out cool. How's the custom (regular sized) Maxx chassis coming along? Had to go to the second page to see if I missed any updates. Now this small Maxx project! Why not try some 30 series wheels on it? As for the body, maybe try some of the Tamiya stuff? The ones for the Lunchbox, Pumpkin, etc. are a bit too small for Stampede sized trucks I believe. What sort of drivelines are you gonna use? Shortened old-style Maxx sliders? Keep us posted; it sounds cool.

I should be getting the final transparent plastic chassis design this Friday if everything goes as planned...

I have to check that, keep in mind that the standard size E-Maxx knuckles have to fit inside it...

That is going to be the hard part, you know, I don't live in the US, so choosing a body is like flying blind...

What sort of drivelines are you gonna use? Shortened old-style Maxx sliders?

For the front and rear center driveshafts, I'm going to use the front center driveshaft from the new E-Maxx, the short one... That will keep the wheelbase short...

And, for the four axle driveshafts, I'm going to use four modified rear center driveshaft from the new E-Maxx, the long one... Maybe this picture explains it a little better:

I would buy a 1/16th E-Maxx in a heartbeat. Hopefully Traxxas will come through on it.


This is definitely a very cool project. It will be interesting to see how a smaller E-Maxx would look.

Well, good news, tomorrow I will have the first version of the custom chassis to start testing this project... The bad news is that it has a small error because I wasn't able to send the latest version on time before he cut this one... But, it's not a big problem, I already fixed the drawing for the second version...

So, I'll post pictures of the chassis tomorrow night... And, I'm still wating for all the parts from eBay, it usually takes from one to three weeks to arrive here... Meanwhile, I can use some spare parts I have over here...

Well, got the chassis today... As I said, it has a couple of errors near the servos and where the tranny goes...



I already fixed one of the problems and this weekend I'll fix the other one... I'll hope to get the second version for the next weekend...

Hahaha... As far as I remember, I haven't seen something like this before...

Well, I finished the new design, including the battery trays...



I had to increase the length in 1cm because the center driveshafts were too long for the previous design...

Hope this new one works jsut fine and hope you like it so far!!!

Great!! You diffinently should only use one servo, the biggest reason that with that little amount of weight what 7 pounds? You won't need it. I've got a 12 pounder and I only need 1 servo. Two servos only complicate things. Side note my servo does 333oz torque. lol. 120oz should be PLENTY FOR YOU.

Yes, I was thinking about that, I guess I'll install the receiver box on the right side where the servo goes...

Does anyone know which rims with 14mm or 17mm hex will fit inside the stock talon 2.8 tires por the Stampede... I like those tires for this project, but I welcome any suggestions...

I almost forgot, I have to design the custom chassis braces...

Why not just drill the center of a 12mm hex out to 6mm instead of the 5 it usually is? The stock traxxas tires really don't fit on anything but stock traxxas rims unfortunately.

Yes, I will try that, but I'm afraid that the bigger pin won't fit inside the hex...

So, I guess I can try to make a custom 12mm hex that can hold a bigger pin...

If the pin is too big lengthwise, then I say grind it down, if it's diameter is that much fatter, then I think you would be best served to lightly dremel the hex out carefully. Much easier than the alternative...

why is the chassis clear? what matierial is that? i missed your other build and cannot find it so fill me in.

If I were you I would have done a flat chassis with truggy style braces(or similar) and used a center diff but you are going for a true maxx simply scaled down. Your braces should be too hard just start with flat stock that is already the perfect height and width then take away what you don't need. It won't be sloped and those may not look great but you want function and you won't see it much. Your chassis from above looks great.

About the flat chassis, I had that idea in mind too, but I will use it on my future 1/5 E-Maxx project...

Well, I'm sticking to the original length of my chassis (21cm/8.25inches) because I don't want this E-Maxx to have a wheelbase larger than the Stampede (26cm/10.25inches), and I'm having a few problems with a few things...

For example, the motor mount plate is too big, I will have to dremel it like (6mm/0.25inches) all around the right border where the spur is... Also, I will have to remove the plastic cover for good, which I like...

Another thing, the short driveshaft is still too long, I had to shave like 3mm of each half... And, some other things I'm trying to solve on the fly...

I'm not stuck, but it's taking more than I expected... Also, the 1.5 RPM a-arms (short ones) that I found on eBay are on transit somewhere between the UK and here... Has anyone bought from villa1982 on eBay?



EDIT: I just found out (according to Traxxas) that the Stampede has a wheelbase of 27cm... Strange, I meassured mine and got 26cm... Maybe I can add 1cm extra...

I think I found the wheels and tires I'm going to use... I only drive on-road, so, this will be a good setup I guess...

Got the Velineon last weekend and a few other things... Tomorrow, I'll go and pick a box from Customs with the rest of the stuff...

Meanwhile, I guess I'm talking too much, right??? So, I have some new pictures...

Short RPM 1.5 arms... They were hard to get...



These are like 15mm shorter than the new ones...



Also, three custom assembled short driveshafts... I'm still missing one and you can see the difference in lenght with the new ones...

Hey, nothing interesting really... I got almost all the parts last week, but I'm still missing the body and the wheels... I haven't decided on them yet...

And, I'm quite happy with the modifications I made to the chassis this past weekend... I'll send the new drawing to the laser cut guy and hopefully I'll have the second plastic chassis this friday... I'll post some pictures of the parts this week...



PS: I decided to make a 1/5 Maxx after all five Maxx projects are done... It's going to be huge!!!

Hey, no, nothing yet, the laser cut guy was behind the schedule and wasn't able to cut the new chassis last week, so, I''m still wating for it... I can't do anything else until I try the new chassis design...

I have a few pictures of the parts... Nothing you don't know...

I'm so mad... The laser cut guy screwed it up again... Look at the new chassis and the old one...



Last time, he blew up my BlackMaxx chassis... Two weeks ago, I sent all my drawings again (BlackMaxx, MiniMaxx and Maxx 4x4x4) and he blew them up by mistake... I was careful and sent him the size of each chassis... A futile effort on my side...

This week he wasn't able to cut them again, and with a little luck he will have them for next week... Almost a month waiting!!!

Sorry guys, I wish this project and all the others could go faster, I feel frustrated...
