More Rear Steer

I got rear steering set up on my Summit. A little mix and match of mostly Traxxas parts, Let me know what you guys think.

yes, plugged both front into a y-harness.


Haven't really tested it outside yet, it has about a 6 foot turning radius though. Gotta get the electrical sealed up, before I get some vid, maybe tomorrow.

Great job , Is your pivot point going through the bumper support (hoop)? Or below it?. I almost have mine up and running but I still have too much "play" in the connections. Im also digging that low stance/ big tire effect.

Thanks Noir, I used the drill press to make a straight through hole in the E-Revo front bumper mount and mounted a Mini E-revo servo saver inside the hoop. Then mounted the Revo bumper upside down to help protect the tie-rods.

Finally got outside with the video camera. I have made a few changes since starting this thread, put a modified front bumper and a summit rear bumper back on, I was going through LED with drawls. I have the springs backed all the way off for this video, my Summit is certainly crawling better than before, but it is a work in progress. here is some video

the design is so straight forward and with traxxas parts that traxxas should make it stock in the next summit model.

The simple answer is lower center of gravity(COG)

I may be wrong in my thinking, but from my rock crawling experiences with my Summit I have found that the softer the suspension is, the more articulation my suspension has and articulation with a low COG is the key to crawling. Sometimes the belly does rub, but it will quite often drag it self over most rocks. That is where the rear steering comes in, to help maneuver around the high center spots.

Another thing I noticed having the suspension jacked up, is that when the suspension does articulate, it pushes the COG up higher, thus making it tip over a lot more often. I believe the Summit has just as good articulation ability as any crawler out there(other than Super Comp Class), but the true crawlers twist when they articulate where the Summit lifts when it articulates. Lifting is a huge problem, so I am trying to get my chassis to more or less stay put and let the suspension do the moving.

Most comp crawlers have very little clearance due to the straight axle and/or motor on axle design. I don't think clearance is a big issue when crawling as long as you can either span the gaps with the tires or avoid getting high centered. Crawling is mostly about going slow and finding the best route

I do however have a plan to increase clearance slightly by going to a bigger tire size, thinking about the RC4wd x-lok lighting super class crawler tire.

you might want to try your system with an Erevo bell crank instead of a merv bell crank, its a little longer (will hang down more) but the extra legth will give the system a wider swing and in turn giving your rear tires a much sharper turning angle.
