    Project: Baja Slash Trophy Truck

Spring is almost here, and itís time for some serious Slash action! Iíve decided that I want to convert my Slash into a mean dessert trophy truck. Inspiration is taken from:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B-9FpSG38Ko&NR=1
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0gue9...eature=related
    http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...rophytruck.jpg
    http://www.desertracing.com/
    http://westcoastchoppers.com/

My Slash already has VXL and ******* LiPo (2S and 3S) installed as well as RPM Narrow Revolvers with Proline DirtHawgs. I currently plan for the following upgrades:

    Tower 224 or Spektrum DX3E 2.4GHz radio
    Proline Desert Rat body
New Era gearbox (or maybe FLM, REM or Golden Horizons)
    Traxxas Steel output drive yokes
    Integy Motor heatsink and fan
    Lots of RPM stuff
    Some STRC alu-stuff

Any alternative or additional suggestions for that scale dessert look are welcomed!
Got the Traxxas Big Bores and the RPM front bumper and light canister set on the way already. I'll keep you posted when it arrives.

I love the whole Baja scene! I actually have a WCC trophy truck in the works. Maybe done as soon as tomorrow. I am gonna steer clear of working lights as the truck will be raced and lights just don't last all that long on track. Keep us updated on your progress! Looking forward to pics!

If you're really serious about building your scale trophy truck..should go with these..

    http://www.rc4wdstore.com/2/product_...roducts_id=923

they're much more scale looking and ACCURATE, just compare the tread with the wikimedia pic on your first post! A true BFG Baja K/R. You need to purchase a set of 2.2 narrow wheels though, won't look good on regular 2.2 truck rims. But as with many scale looking parts, they're all for show. Don't expect dirt tearing grip.

    Alternative:
    http://www.rc4wdstore.com/2/product_...roducts_id=966

    Rims:
    http://www.rc4wdstore.com/2/product_...roducts_id=852

But these rims weigh a ton ..but since you have a VXL it won't matter much, and you might get an added grip due to increased mass.

    Chassis:
    http://www.rc4wdstore.com/2/product_...roducts_id=718

With all these upgrades, I estmate the Slash weighs almost 20 ounces heavier than stock.
Myth busted: Blitz is not faster on the track.

Yeah - I dig the Baja scene too. Ever since I went on a one month vacation to California, Arizona and Nevada two years ago, I've wanted to do this

I'm planning to buy both the RPM rear bumper, bumper mount and motor protector. I just want to make sure they will fit the alu tranny case I eventually end up buying. Currently looking at the New Era one, but am also considering the Golden Horizons tranny.

Wow - those rims look awesome... also a bit pricy, though...
I'm not too worried about weight, as I'm using the truck purely for bashing. And as I'm running VXL on 3s LiPo, I don't have any problems with speed - but might have one with regard to motor temps. That's why I'm looking into alu tranny cases and heatsink/fan combos.

Baja build?! Awsome! I'm subscribing. Actually gonna turn my baja bug body a little more scale, light buckets, rpm front bumper, jato bulkhead and suspension arms for a wider track in the front end, I've had my slash since it came out and still haven't broken an a arm, other parts...... Not so lucky. You guys think proline roofrack will fit and hold a "spare" tire?
Traxxas should just cash my checks for me

Big Bores and RPM front bumper and light canister set have arrived! Hurrah!

What wt would you guys recommend for the Big Bores? I'm using my Slash mostly for off road bashing, so I'm guessing that some kind of soft setup would be preferable...

Oh - and just for future reference, a picture of my Slash right before the project start (and right after a bash in the last snow and mud...)

    Latest update:

As I just realized that I virtually will end up replacing all parts of my Slash with new (and better) ones for this project, I've decided that my Trophy Truck might as well be a completely new one with all parts assembled by myself. The goal is to use as few Traxxas parts as possible (at least where it makes sense, i.e improves performance). This will eventually give me two trucks - one for me (the TT) and one for my son (the old one)...

So I've started from scratch with the Slash chassis only. I've currently got for $150 STRC alu parts on the way as well as for $150 RPM and other stuff from Tower. Can't wait till it get here...

Most of the hardware is now complete. Added

    • STRC steering bellcrank
    • Traxxas hard steel output drive yokes
    • Traxxas aluminium toe links
    • Traxxas Big Bore bumpers

Now its basically only the electronics that are missing...

hey im just saying, but that truck looks bullet proof except for those trx alluminum camber links and steering links. broke al of the links up front multiple times, still got the alluminums in rear, idk how they survived, but now i have lunsford in the front.
if you want me to i can break your truck for free!

Oh yeah - it's coming along just fine All electronics are in, and I've been doing the first short test runs. Still waiting for some minor things to arrive though - e.g. a set of proline Trencher tires... oh, and painting my Desert Rat body of course

I will try to post some picture tomorrow if I find the time...

As promised, here are some pics of the current state of my truck.

The following parts have been added since my last post:
    • VXL-3s (from my old Slash)
    • Spektrum DX3E
    • Traxxas Servo 2075 (also from my old Slash)
    • jConcepts Overtray

Don't pay too much attention to the tires - I'm waiting for my new Proline Trenchers to arrive. Note that the antenna wire is completely inside the sealed box, as it was too short to route to the antenna tube. Still the initial runs indicate that the range is more than enough.

I initially intended to buy a new servo, but couldn't decide which one to get, so I ended up using my old Slash servo (new gear set (2072) on the way as well). I also considered using the servo that came with the DX3E, however I am not sure if this is a good substitute for the Traxxas one, and also the wire to the receiver was too short.

I did consider a CVD kit, but I've read so many bad things about them (FLM, Venom, etc.) on these pages, that I'm still a bit reluctant. I might upgrade in the future though, if someone can convince me...

Thanks for the driveshaft tip - I'll keep that in mind!

I'm not too happy about the grey stuff either - at least not in the rear bumper. I might buy a black one... But the skid plates look great I think - same color as the chassis.

The Traxxas plastic takes dye really well, if you can find a pot big enough for the chassis. The one I had was barely big enough for my 1/16 Slash.

Finally the initial version of my Baja Slash Trophy Truck is ready for action! Added since my last post are the Proline Split Six and Trenchers wheels and tires as well as the Dessert Rat body (not bad for a first time ever paint job I think ).

I will be using the next couple of days for minor adjustments and optimizations. And still some more parts to be added, e.g. lights, etc.

Really nice work! That's basically what I want to do with my Slash. I built a similarly modified BackSlash and upgraded so many parts that I eventually rebuilt a stock slash from my stash of parts. So far I have added the Pro-Trac kit and trencher tires. Many more mods. to come! Awesome job!
