Well we finally broke something after running the car HARD since Christmas morning. My question is should I upgrade to alum or go with the plastic again?

Go alum. The plastics, even RPM will be brittle in cold weather IMO. I got Traxxas and love them.

I have chose to stick with the plastic. It is easy to replace and saves your slipper and spur. The plastic hub is designed to be the weak point.
Break it, so you can upgrade it!
I called Traxxas this morning and told them about the broken part. They are replacing the hub! I'm impressed.
