    nimh battery

Nitro guy trying electric so dont beat me up too bad. How popular are nimh batteries still. Other forums, the people tell me to go lipo right away, but I already have a Prophet charger for nimh. what is a good nimh brand. My lhs deals mostly in Venom, are they any good? How much run time can I expect with a 7 cell 5000mah nimh battery in a stock slash. Im not racing it yet, just bashin around.

My LHS carries a lot of Venom too. On this board and over on RCCrawler I've seen mixed reviews. It seems like most of the people I've seen are ordering their packs (not venom) from cheapbatterypacks.com (i did) or Max Amps. The Elite cells seem to be pretty tough. NiMH isn't dead by any means, keep in mind a lot people on here race and really get into the hobby so naturally they're going to want the higher end stuff.

Forgot to answer the last part of your question. I run 7cell 5000mah packs (elite cells from cheapbatterypacks.com) and can bash for ~15min pretty hard before swapping in a fresh pack. But that was with an Orion 19T motor "race" motor. The stock Titan was a power hog that got burned up before I got the 5000 packs arrived so not sure what the run times would be but a guess would be 10-12 minutes?

Lipos last and have a constant discharge! They don't just start making your car run slow when they are about dead like nimh. You can expect a 45-50min run time with a new 5000 nimh!

Some people will tell you it is old news, but is isn't. I've heard venom are more lower quality and don't do good with VXL, which you will want, haha. I had a Duratrax 7 cell 4200 mah and it got hot and i blew a cell with VXL, but i got a traxxas 3 series and am impressed with it, good runtimes, and barely gets warm-hot. I would suggest getting a 7 cell, better punch and more fun.

I had a Prophet Plus and used it on my Promatch 8.4 5000mAh pack and it fried a cell. I was able to trade someone on CL for some stuff. The deal included a mildly used xl-5 Pede, a set of Jaco foams for the Pede/Rusty, some other foams????, a Promatch 7.2 4600mAh, and an Onyx 230 charger. I highly recommend this charger for NiMH batteries, or something with adjustable settings so you don't kill your battery.

Venom batteries don't last long. The cells they use are not real good quality. Out of the past 4 Venom packs I have had, all 4 have a bad cell and do not charge. The Traxxas series 3 or series 4 batteries work very well and are not too badly priced. Also the duratrax ONYX 3000mah batteries are good too. Some people here (including me) still use the NiMh batteries for racing due to they add weight and help with traction on some tracks.

My venom 3000mah 7.2v 6 cell would give me about 30min run times in my stampede. But then after a while of use the run times began to shorten!

jcassidy-My Prophet had the same settings and it still killed the battery. You need a charger with peak detection settings. Yes you can get 45 min out of a properly geared NiMH battery. My 5000mAh does that all day long at full throttle. My 4600mAh in my Rusty tonight got about 30-35 min.

I get 30min run time with a 4600mah measured with the timer on my DX3s. I would expect about 35min real world measured run time with 5000mah battery. 45-50 min doesn't seem realistic to me... imho

Duratrax makes good off the shelf batteries for $50

I had no idea. the people over at rctech was making it sound like the best I could expect from nimh was 15-20 minutes. I really dont want to invest in lipo right now so I think I'm gonna stick with nimh for now, thanks for the advice? Whare are you all getting your batteries from?
